I have run all 3 configurations on my 944 spec car.

Power,
Power no pump looped
manual.

For my light small tired 944 spec car I like the manual rack. It is abit slower to turn, but gives great feedback and is lighter and one less thing to leak.

Some guys really like power and other love a looped power rack. It will depend on what you really like.

So you can be fast with any set-up, but as a driver you should chose what you like the most (and what is allowed given your rules).

Another request for a DIY here. Will the fluid heat up much when it's not being compressed by a pump?

Fluild will heat up less with no pump. Fluid is incompressible so it does not compress at all. However the act of pumping it does add heat. With no pump there is nothing to create heat. Just turning the wheel does not heat up the fluid.

Was hooking up tie rods today and problem #1 occured. The manual rack from the 1986 NA car is a couple inches to short for the turbo.

Compared the complete inner/outer tie rods and the Power Steerings rods are longer, rack is same width. Do I have to get complete turbo rods or what is the secret here?
Maybe I should run extreme toe-in, 30 degrees or so...

.. hm.. just found this. ( 87 & up, mine is a '87)

(.. up inluding 86)
http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...347.033.01.htm

Thats the answer? New complete tie rods?

those tie rods are expensive and the main reason it is hard to fit a manual rack to a late offset 944. Of course it is a drop in for any 86 and old car.

But so worth it, the manual steering on my 87 feels SOOOOO nice compared to the power steering it came with...

Default Did you remove the piston?

For those of you that are running looped or plugged PS racks, did you disassemble the rack and remove the piston?

FWIW, I've driven my father-in-law's 87 track car with a manual rack. My car is set up almost identical to him, but I have a smaller steering wheel, no roll cage, and power steering. I cranked in as much caster as I could, and I feel that I get equivalent feedback with my PS setup. Hoosier 225/50R16's up front. Having said that, I've only done a few DE's, so my progress in developing a feel for the car may be a really big confounding factor here.
