Default Remove engine out top?

I´m going to remove my engine and renovate it but what do i need to do to lift it out?

i found this in another thread, is it correct?

Out the top:

- remove at least the front exhaust section.
- remove the clutch slave and starter.
- disconnect the central tube (just remove the 4 bolts).
- remove PS pump from engine - leave hanging from lines (thoughtfully)
- if equipped, remove AC compressor from engine - leave hangin from lines (thoughtfully)
- disconnect engine harness, fuel lines, etc.
- remove electric fans.
- suspend engine with hoist.
- disconnect engine mounts (from top)
- drop front crossmember at least 6-8 inches (this allows you to keep the PS fluid lines attached. You basically drop the 4 bolts to the crossmember, the control ar to body mounts and the steering shaft input linkage.
- remove crank accessory pulleys (only - not the timing and balance shaft parts - this is only necessary because it will bind on the hood latch when coming out)
- carefully get engine far enough forward to be free of the drive shaft, then lift out.

Why wouldn't you do it out the bottom?

because my garage is very small and i can´t lift the hole car up
seems much easier to lift the engine out the top

thats a good list thats how ive done it twice in the past, once on my 944 and once on a 944 with a 968 motor

at the least you should remove the power steering pulley but if you can get all of them off that would give you a few more inches of wiggle room

You will probably end up taking the engine out from underneath anyway.. So save your self some time and curses and take it out that way. Taking it out from above... It´s kinda hard to get enough clearance to get the transaxle shaft to disengage from the engine if you dont dismount the crossmember etc. And that I think is the reason for your "short cut" ? If you do dismount those parts, well then everything´s possible. You dont need to raise the car that much to get the engine out, if that is your concern. I used jacks and a couple of wooden blocks to get enough clearance... Good luck!

hmm once you drop the cross member 8" you are half way down the road of going out the bottom i would think take the radiator out bonnet off remove header panel ... so you don't ding it with the engine are smart steps for going out the top . my other advice in forward planing is the engine is often about 8" tall at its front carstors and this is often a real drama when they hit the crossmber.

I always let the engine fall to the ground than I use the engine hoist to lift the front of the car then I slide the engine out.

you dont need to remove or even loosen the crossmember to remove from the top. i have found it to be nice to remove the motor mount brackets though for side clearance

Default I have only removed one motor

and I did it from the bottom. It only took a few hours with basic hand tools and a hoist using Clarks Garage instructions. You don't have to lift the front up that high, just enough to clear the motor. I was surprised how smooth it went.

Or, you can do like I did. Dropped the motor onto the ground. Had 5 mexican yard workers lift the front of the car up while my wife and I pulled the engine out. Took 30 seconds.

When you don't have a headlight bar and other assorted "street" requirements, out the top is very easy as well. I've actually never dropped one out the bottom, always done it from the top with a hoist and leveler, I did one by myself and the leveler made it very easy to pop into the torque tube shaft/bell housing.

once the engine was off the stand, 1.5 hours on the bell housing and motor mounts from the top

remove the radiator (for either top or bottom removal). its quick and you will be happy with the added room and a non dented radiator!

Okay this site will come handy when doing the engine from the top,

http://www.noswearing.com/dictionary

Now, keep in mind that guys like Master Skiwalker and Obi chris white can rebuild engines with only their light sabers and their eyes closed. the rest of us had to do it whitout the force.
