Okay this site will come handy when doing the engine from the top,

Now, keep in mind that guys like Master Skiwalker and Obi chris white can rebuild engines with only their light sabers and their eyes closed. the rest of us had to do it whitout the force.

The only way I will pull one out from the top is if the head is off and the header panel is out.
Ok, where the hell is Leia...

Old thread, but having removed from the top I can say it is a PITA. It was really tight getting it out, as the thrust bearing on the clutch bound against the bell housing. I think it would be easier removing the clutch first. When going in, when does the clutch get installed? - ie before installing engine or after?

So you bolt the pressure plate assembly to the flywheel once the engine is in? What holds the clutch assembly in the bell housing while you are installing the engine?

The fork holds the pressure plate through the release bearing. The disc is placed onto the driveshaft lying against the PP.

old thread.... i'm going to do this out the bottom. Going to make my life a whole lot easier trying to replace all the seals and stuff i've been looking at doing. And cleaning the engine up I think someone washed mine in oil.

Nice thing about engine out the top is you do not have to mess with the tranny. To drop it out the bottom in a small garage place the car on jack stands. Place the engine on the ground. Remove the back jack stands, the front of the car pivots up high enough to pull the engine.
Definitely get the radiator out of your way either way you go.

I removed the radiator, unbolted the engine from the TT (left bellhousing attached) pulled the engine forward off the TT (had to tilt the front of the engine down after the TT shaft was disengaged) and lowered it to the ground. Did it by myself practically with the wife helping watch for snags.
That is a gross simplification, as I didn't feel the necessity to list everything I removed, but that's the gist. Re-installation was the reverse of removal. Once the engine was ready to be removed, it took maybe 15-20 min to get it on the ground.

I have done it both ways and dropping the engine out the bottom is way easier.
This is my preferred way now after doing it several times. If you have room for a hoist you can do it this way.
