I have to say. The 80's 911 is a VW bettle with a bigger engine

You are completely wrong... a 911 3.2 is a sublime drive and unless you've modded your 951 or you're driving an S, that Carrera will put you in its rearview right quick.

Learn more about these cars before you make comments. Any car will rust if neglected driven on salty roads. Older 911's were prone to rust. The 80s will not rust as easy different metal. Learn to drive a 911 and you can drive anything.

Those last comments were fairly ignorant of the car. They tend to be solid and well built cars that last as well as our cars. 931, I will disagree with you, a very lightly modded 951 will hang with a 3.2 and surpass it in a straight line. I won't argue handling, as I have never pushed one in that regard.

Auto Motor und Sport did several tests 951 vs 911 Carrera, and the tests were all basically even:
27 Nov 85
26 Jun 85
11 Oct 86 (928 smoked both)
3 April 1985

the 951 cost a bit more also, so it only makes sense that Porsche would make performance equivilent

I don't think the 911's were hot dip galvanized...
the 944's had a 10 year rust warranty which was unheard of at the time

911s were galvanized starting in 1975.

Each has it's own qualities. I suggest owning both.

I had a 77, nice but not great, imo, too rough/basic for daily use...

my next is going to be a 928 86 most likely...
that car is amazing, but complicated...I was scared away...

the 951, although a complicated engine control system, seems pretty straight forward to me...

although having 2 hobby cars might be a bit excessive...
along with an e46 M3 and a B7 RS4...

although a 930 does pique my interest

Trying to start something when clearly you admit to not even driving a 911? What a useless thread and not a good reflection on you.

The 951 is a truly fantastic car in ALL respects, I love them, so much so that if finances permit I would love to have one.

The 911 is a great car, excellent build quality, excellent reliability, and great power and handling. If you never have experienced one keep your (shallow) comments to yourself.

Be opened minded, don't get crabby because you have to put your car away, as the Toronto winter get ready to visit for the next 7-8 months.

I have opinion and i wanted to see if some 944 owners share it that is all. I'm sorry if I offended you. I respect the 911 from the 70's 80's era i just wouldn't want to own one.

why bring his character into this? uncalled for

he's allowed to state his opinion...refute it with centric facts about the cars, not about his character

Thanks for the kind words. But maybe this thread was a bad idea.. in retrospect. Still think the old 911 is an over-hyped go-kart though.

I like the 911's, the heritage, the innovation, etc.
they have been so refined that they shine
the newer ones a very fast and good looking...

but in the end, they were a compromise, a derivation of the bug, it's what the good Dr. Ing (h.c.) had on hand in a war torn Germany, so he used it to feed himself and his family

the fact that the newer designs are front or mid engined speaks volumes
in fact aren't they talking about a mid engined 911?

Perspective: My very first car way back as a 15 yr. Sophomore in high school (Texas has always been strange guys) was a 62 Corvair Spyder. Yep, turbo. I learned a lot about big engine way out back handling and it had turbo lag like a 727. (Pre high bypass turbo fan engines). They didn’t have a clue how to size and plumb the things. That car didn’t make it out of high school; it bit my dad while having some “fun” so parents thought just too dangerous. So I got a nice safe new 65 GTO 4 speed, limited slip etc. What parents! Flash forward past the 914 etc. to ’84. Bought a 944 NA but my love was a 3.2 coupe. I just could not afford it. Buddy was service mgr. at dealer so always tried to arrange a 911 loaner when had service. I have always lusted for a Guards Red 84-87 couple with silver Fuchs. The only mods would be some nice stainless full exhaust and chip. So, having had that best of the Corvairs and driven a lot of old style Beetles I promise that generation of 911’s were very sweet and light years away from Beetles and Corvairs. Seem to remember only rated at 200 HP in ’84 but it had to be RWHP or some oversized horses.
Someday when get the 951 squared away I’m thinking of attacking my old ‘69 912. Same buddy races a ‘67 912 and wants my engine. Has a 2.4 six would like to trade. I think I could get over that ’84 911 lust with a very light weight body with about a 2.7 / 225+ HP or so hung out back. (I know, heilcoil the studs etc. on those but done that before too). The 3.2 Carrera had all those sort of issues already squared away. Again, sweet cars.

Come on now.... only a 944 owner would make a comment like this... Two completly different cars... Also look at the road tests on the cars and you will find that a 86-87 911 turbo is only a little quicker then a 944 turbo. On the track the 944 turbo quickly fills this minor void by offering better handling.
