Default I have to say. The 80's 911 is a VW bettle with a bigger engine

.... and that makes the ''86 - 89' 944 Turbo a freakin Supercar compared to the 911.

That is my thoughts. I could be wrong, i never driven the 911 from the 80's but when i look at it it's simply nothing special other than the cool looks and legendary status in the media's eyes.

The real car though is a front-engine transaxle sportscar though, right? I'm just simpleton though what do i know.

You are opening up a Big Can of Worms Here!!!! Oh and BTW, it is a more modern Corvair.

I love the '80s 911, but having driven many of them, I tend to feel the 944 is a far nicer car. Now go into a 996 and its a different story. My $.02 take it for what it is.

I've tracked both - '85 911 Carrera and '89 Turbo S.
You are dead wrong about the 80's 911 being anything like a VW. Drive one and you will see.

It is all about perspective....80's 911 is a supercar for those of us who started out with VW Beetles & 914s. Late 80s 911 is the highest evolution of Porsche's torsion bar suspension cars, and the best of the end of that lineage. 4x the hp of VW Beetle sure feels like supercar in comparison.

I own both 951 & 80's 911. They are both special cars. I picked up a 951 over the summer for something new and different to play with. The 911 is a more raw and edgy. 951 more modern and refined. I like both. I get the feeling of firing up a WWII fighter plane when the cylinders fire up on the 911. The 951 is like a jet when the boost kicks in. I wish my 911 was more refined and wish the 951 were as tight feeling as the 911. So, it got both... Still learning about 951 and appreciate it more and more each time i work on it. Would not trade the 911 for anything, and will add to the collection as I learn to appreciate the other Porsches. All Porsche sports cars are special. No comment on SUVs...

This is a conversation starter I used to hear all the time when I owned a 911 (a 2.4L 911T). There are design similarities with the Beetle; rear engine, air cooled, flat floor pan, floor mounted pedal cluster, etc, etc. But you could say the same thing about a lot of cars. Is a Mustang Boss 302 from the 60's a glorified Ford Falcon?

More as an analogy than a direct comparison with the VW. But I understand completely. The 911 is more raw. More basic. More... true to it's sporty tendencies. But... Without a turbo, the older 911's aren't anything special until you hit turns. Well... Not "Supercar performance" special anyway.

I can't say I like the way older 911s look but I would jump at the chance to drive one. Even if my car is faster

I got to drive late 930 turbo once. It was a trade-in at the Porsche/Volvo/Infiniti dealer I worked at. Yeah I know. Trade-in, right? Thing was nearly FLAWLESS. Looked AMAZING! Black, light tan leather seats (as far as I can remember). Oh, man I was AMAZING. Easily capable of trouncing my lowly little 951. But I drove this 911 years before I got the '51. So, it was a surreal and inspiring experience. To this day I can't figure out what made my managers trust me with such a pristine collectible car at the age of 19!

I was thrown off, the second I got in the car. The door handles. The seating position. Keep in mind, I was used to driving a Saturn everyday... At a Porsche dealer lol. The transmission felt.. Notchy. The engine was very mechanical sounding compared to other engine's exhaust notes. Cool (for the record, my 944 mimicks that note as best it can which gets attention. Love eet.).

Anyway, that car was mental compared to anything I had ever driven before. I got done detailing it for a customer, and finished up little things like stray wax lines and smudges on the glass. I take it out onto the roadway to return to the dealer, and merge into traffic. HERE'S AN INTERESTING EXPERINCE FOR A 19 YEAR-OLD! I feather into 1st. Put it into second. Get it to 3k and stand on the gas pedal for two reasons. I had a large Toyota truck behind me that didn't want to do less than 50 in a 40, and second, I just wanted to see what the car would do. Yeah...

My first realization comes something like this, "(foot flattens the gas), Wow- this isn't what I expected. Where's the speed?" Then engine finally crept to about 4k and the entire rear-end just steps sidways, and I hear the car singing a rhythm to the sound of rev limit. That's when I got my second realization: "WOAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" It fishtails side to side and I nearly land this car into the curb to my left like 4 TIMES, but only because I let off and I didn't know that's what you're not supposed to do. That's when I figured I shouldn't have done that. But it sure was fun!

Anyway, I putted the car back to the dealer where the customer was waiting, and as I pulled it up to the building, the customer was waiting with a smile on his face. No sooner than I open the door do I hear, "So, did ya race it?" He just shoots a toothy grin at me. I pause and do what any guilty teen does and say, "Ummm... No?" Then he slaps me on the shoulder and yells, "I'm just kiddin'!"

I haven't driven an NA 911 older than a 996, but It would be pretty fun if there were turns to have fun in.

lol as if this thread wasn't baited enough.
The 80's 911's I've driven were far from just a VW beetle. I'll leave it at that. I'd love to find a place in my garage for both an 80's 911 (after 83) and my 951.

Wouldn't the 968 have that crown?

911's are great, but there was always this thing about them that bothered me. It looks like when you drive them the *** wants oversteer and send you into a tree if you don't know how to throw them into the corners at the right speed. I've test drove another 951 where i threw the *** out just on a left turn at a traffic light (but that was my first test drive in a turbo) and i guess the tires were a little worn but you really have to do something wrong to crash a 944 i think. When i see a 911 i always think that the car would of crashed into the grass or a tree.. a ditch or curb at some point in it's life I also think the car rusts like crazy. The engine in the back looks like a lawnmower, and you always see some kind of rust in there too. The stick looks like it's from a truck or jeep .. and it just sort of sticks out there pretty high.

Things i love about the 80's 911 is the headlights. The *** end.. and the dash... the dash really does look like it's right out of a WWII fighter plane. They sound good too
