Default Best Low Cost Track Car

Looking for feedback on the best low-cost track car that won't get run over in the straights.... (no mazda miata)

Some candidates:

Porsche 944 S2
Porsche 944 Turbo (minimal engine mods)
Honda S2000
E36 M3 or even 328is

Others ? Opinions ?

The S2000 wouldnt really need much to be decent on the track. They make good power with bolt ons and there are very high quality parts available. Great forums exist as well (s2ki)

Plus, you wouldnt need to perform the amount of maintenance on the S2000 as you would a 944

RX7, 240-280z up to 1978, These will require suspension mods, and the RX7 has it's own SCCA class....I used to have a 78 280Z with a modded Skyline motor. That was a fun great handling car after proper brake and suspension mods. Fast as hell too.

You can get the RX7 cars for under 5K ready to run at the track.

Having recently done a trackday in an early model (but very well prepped) M3 I'd also say that they would be a good candidate. You should be able to pick something up that someone has spent all their money on and you benefit from in more than price alone.

Default How much?

How much for the car do you plan to spend?

How much do you want to dedicate to consumables?

Find a good E36, and you can dominate ITS. 951 will kill you on maintenance. S2 is good but 3.0L parts are a bit more rare and expensive than the 2.5L stuff.

Watching our local race results, guys are hanging with the stock 944 turbos and S2's with their 8V SP1/SPEC 944's. Lightweight, no frills, momentum cars.

Spec Miata or 944NA. Get one with a log book in a good condition and you will skip the steep spending curve to prep them.

Determine what are your goals first. Do you plan on only doing DE's or actual W2W, then decided on the car with budget being key. I personally would go with a 944 so you can run with PCA and the 944 spec series.

My 2 cents

Good point, some cheap SP cars out there that are great fun. Also depends on the track, somewhere like limerock the disparity is not that great between a track ns vs turbo, maybe 2 seconds as it is not a horsepower track but a momentum track as you say. Move to a bigger track like the glen and the difference is substantially more in seconds.

Correct, if your home track is something like Road America, you probably want some hp, LOL!

best low cost race car. hmm. You should find it right next to the whitest unicorn, and the luckiest leprechan... all in fun. just damn expensive on any level. Also relative. I think the DSR's give you the biggest bang for your racing buck.!

Well the OP said track car, so I guess we need to know if it will be a DE/weekend car or a dedicated track/race car...
