What we all must remember though, is that the new Z06 has 20 years on the 951. A corvette of the 951's time wouldn't hold a prayer to a 951. In any aspect really. When comparing these cars, should make the comparisons realistic.
Also, comparing cars of the late 2000's isn't a good comparison either. Of course the 951 may not be DD sufficient to high tech savy people seeking amenities, but in sure in the 80's it was. Very much so.
The amount of technology put into a 951 was amazing for the time. Only recently has the corvette really begun to actually get big. Meaning...the car a corvette should be. Mean and downright fast. Much like the Stingrays of the 60's. Any Corvette past the 60's and before the C6 does NOT impress me or get my attention. Just hate them. 70's and 80's vettes have got to be some of the ugliest cars ever made...

When it comes to a DD, it is not about the car in its day. It is about what car makes the most sense in 2009. I agree about the 951 being ahead of its time in the early/mid 1980s. But as you pointed out, that was 25 years ago. There are far better choices today.
My 951 provides lots of weekend enjoyment and my kids are crazy about it. My 2 and half year does a sprint to the garage when he hears it fire up. My 10 year old daughter has visions of racing it like Lindsay Lohan in the Herbie movie. The 951 certainly has its niche, but not as a DD where safety and mobile office capabilities are at a premium.
I was able to fit in my Mustang GT because it was a convertable. Do any over 6 foot persons have any experience with a convertible vette? If I am not mistaken, the Z06 is not even available as a convertible. If I could fit in one, I would probably find a way to get one. (One of the main reasons I got hooked on a 944/951 is that I actually fit in it.)

Corvette's = POS's...******* owners. Add in a cam, heads, intake, headers, & some Pfadt suspension....real douche nozzles. Period.
Pretty cool jewlery though.

Nevermind. Not worth it. Phenomenal cars at an even more phenomenal price. I wish Porsche could match that performance for dollar.

Where did you come up with this stereotype? There are 4 new vettes in my neighborhood, all owned by laid back and pleasant car enthusiasts.

Agree. Too bad GM couldn't have replicated these traits across its product line. The company might have been able to survive the downturn with a massive government bailout.

I know a few C6Z owners. Yes, they really are that fast. No BS "secret mods" to run those times and speeds. I also agree - it's a VERY SMOOTH powerband. It just doesn't FEEL as fast as it is.
I owned a 2001 Z06 back in 2001. Box stock I went 12.40@115. Long tubes + intake I went 11.90s @ 119. The car only put down 360 @ the rear wheels (this was with a very early set of TPIS long tubes, which were standard C5 headers, NOT made specifically for the LS6 motor.) The new C6 Z06's are a whole new ballgame.
Now in comparison, my buddy had a new Viper GTS at the time. It was dead even in a straight line to my car (when it was stock) but talk about a FLAT power curve. My Z06 felt WAY WAY WAY faster, almost turbo-car-ish by comparison. The Z06's acceleration seemed to increase as the revs climbed, giving an actual sense of "power band." The Viper pulled the same from idle as it did at redline. Boring to drive and beat on, IMO.
The perception of speed and HOW the power comes on is, IMO, just as important as the power and numbers it turns. Personally I'd rather have a slow car that FELT fast than a fast car that felt slow.

I didn't last very long on the CorvetteForum... most of the guys were *********. Old dudes with attitudes, and they all seemed to hate the fact that I was ~23 and could afford a new Z06 (hey what can I say, I was young, single, no bills, so why not spend a bunch of money on my car?) I found myself hanging out with a bunch of F-body guys. Even though my GM days are long since behind me, I still stay in regular contact with quite a few guys from the MFBA (Midwest F-Body Assoc.)

The Z06 cars dominated the ORR event I ran. Many were really rubbed on, but I was very impressed. Several were running 155-160 mph in the half mile grudge drags. That is crankin!!!!!

I get the impression that the original poster wasn't actually concerned about the ability to DD any of these cars? As for performance, you can't beat time. It marches on unfailingly and technology with it. Sounds to me like these new Vettes are very good but what do we want from a car? Buy what you can afford and choose from that list I guess. You guys pay half or less of what the rest of the world seems to for cars so your lists are bigger than ours. lol

I really liked the phrase from Jim's post mentioning the acceleration seeme to increase with speed. I don't care how slow of a turbo or boosted car you own, they ALL have a sense of the acceleration increasing. This why the people that love turbo cars...love them lol. An n/a car just can't increase it's acceleration through the RPM's. There's nothing to blow more air into the motor.
Like I said and many others have said/agreed on is that a Z06 may be downright fast, but certainly doesn't feel like it. You almost have to watch the speedo to know you're going faster. Any turbo car gives a feeling of going faster, a lot better.
I've contemplated selling my 951 when done and taking out a loan to get a C5 Z06 or a LS2 C6. Then again, I'd much rather keep both 944's and get myself a trailblazer SS. Still get the LS2 and oh how lovely some LS7 heads and a cam would be on it...
