Default Wife changing oil for the 1st time in 88 951

Let me first say that my husband is usually the posting the threads if we have a question...I am usually the one under the hood while he is explaining what needs to be done...we make a great team. He is at work today and I really do not have another chance to change the oil in my baby for another two weeks and she needs it now. She was running low and went ahead and put a quart of Mobil1 in her to bring the level back up. I have no idea what kind of oil the idiot I bought her from decided to use in her and I am thinking that if it was not a synthetic then it is probably not a good idea to mix the two? Is there a certain brand filter I should look into getting? Please excuse the ignorance, but she is my first turbo that I have ever worked on and I am learning as I go. Is there anything else I should know about purchasing before heading to the store? Is changing the oil in this car going to be any different than another car?...except for the fact that this one will be a priviledge instead of a chore!

most here use the mahle OEM black color oil filters but i have used the NAPA ones before and had no problems.

As far as which oil, now that is a huge can of worms. everyone has their opinions, i always used either 15w50 or 20w50 Mobil 1 synthetic in my 951. good luck!

You'll use a bit of profanity on the oil filter as it drips or pours out...paper towels.

Most users of synthetic here are Mobil, Amsoil, or Red Line. Dino oil users are mostly Valvo Racing or Castrol...this statement is just a relative statement, as oil is very subjective around here.

This is probably too late, but... If you get the car warmed up, drain most of the oil out, and then punch a hole in the top of the oil filter (I use a scratch awl), that will let more oil drain out of the filter before you remove it, which will help minimize the spillage.

Just make sure you can break the filter loose a bit before punching a hole in it or you'll be sorry you did!

What ever oil filter you get make sure it has a check valve in it. If you do not then you will normally get valve train noise until you do. I personally use the Mahle. You can find them at your local BAP.

I am also in the Dino camp.
