I think the turbo lag is fine when you're using the car for commuting/highway duties and road circuits where you are able to keep the engine spooled, but it sucks ***** for autocrossing. I don't want to even try taking my car to an autocross because of the turbo lag. I know I'll just get into a corner and the turbo will spool and I'll spin, or let off the gas and get out of the power. Either way it will be slow.

Spin at Autocross and you knock over a few cones and embarass yourself. Spin on the road on a corner and collide sideways with a pick-up truck. In the second scenario you will quickly test the premise that the 951 is built like a tank and can hold its own with a much larger vehicle. (Very skeptical)

I have been watching the variable geometry turbocharger thread. I have asked about this technology many times. I would love to see someone adapt it to a 951 and truly provide a near flat TQ curve with a 4 cylinder. My DBB turbo was a step in the right direction, but a VATN system would be much better.

When Shelby was making his comments in the 1980s about his turbo Dodge and "needing to know how to drive it", turbo systems were primitive by today's standards. He wouldn't even consider building a car like that today. He would use the latest and greatest and build a balanced vehicle that would appeal to both insurance companies and the majority of the high performance car market consumers.

Yeah but have you seen my shoe collection??

Actually I like the lag too for the same reasons as the OP stated...however it really isn't the best for all round effectiveness. You can cut the lag with an S2 ring and pinion but only if you like shifting gears. I do so that's fine, but some others might find it a bit tiresome.

I dont mind lag. If you dont like it, buy a C5/C6 corvette.

The longer you wait for full boost, the better the end result is, just like foreplay

A little lag is a sign of a higher efficiency turbo system, which will give you great power when it's in its power band. This allows the 951 to out-accelerate many modern high performance cars. On faster roads, in higher gears, a nicely modded 951 with the engine always under some load, you just ease into the throttle and the car just pulls away.
Enjoy it for what it is.
Those of you who don't like it; I can't imagine why you'd buy this car, then.
That being said, it is a little harder to autocross. But, take it as a challenge; makes you a better driver.
At our local autox, I run in a broad class range that includes higher powered rear wheel drive cars. After a bit of seat time, I'm now usually in the top three or four. Last time out, I came in second, right behind a well driven Ferrari 348

Much like 911 types enjoy the challenge of taming a car with the engine at the wrong end, I enjoy the challenge of driving the 951 and accommodating it's idiosyncrasies. And the big woosh at the end is a nice pay off too
