Default How to clean engine?

I want to clean my engine bay, it's filthly. I did a search "clean engine" .. can't find much. I think i read somewhere that brake cleaner spray is good, but i'm worried of using anything that might be flammable? I understand to cover the battery cable tray area and the fuel line area. What else should i do? What products? Just scrub with a wirebrush and some brake cleaner?

make sure if your cleaning metal with some product that it will not eat through rubber and other stuff.
Armor All works good on rubber. I used grill cleaner (super degreaser) on the valve cover. It worked great, but you have to make sure you rinse it off really good

Ask in the Concours and Car Care/Detailing forum here on RL.
Lots of professional advice and opinions on products and techniques, usually with before/after pictures.

You can also search www.autopia.org

I believe that most autopart places sell engine-degreasers specifically made to clean all the gunk that accumulates on your engine. I found a walkthough a while ago about cleaning engines online somewhere, but it basically said to go to a self-use carwashes, cover any exposed electrical parts with a garbage bag or some sort of plastic, use the engine degreaser as per the instructions it came with, then just spray down the engine.

I haven't had a chance to do it yet, but that is the way I will probably go about it.

Simple Green does wonders. Don't use any heavy degreasers and I wouldn't use ArmorAll that stuff is crap.

Look at this thread from a RL Sponsor. Click on the engine bay section, great article with photos too.

+1 OUNATE.

I use Simple Green Max Automotive degreaser with different scrub brushes and wire brushes. When I hade the intake manifold off I used a simple green spray bottle, water spray bottle, shopvac, and compressed air. Just cover and tape off where necessary.

I was a concours nut for several years, with my 87 na. I was happy with simple green and hosing it off. I would dry what I could reach, use compressed air, dry again, then start the engine to finish drying. I am the second owner of my 951. The engine had never been cleaned when I bought it three years ago. I did the above and what a difference. The only thing I sealed off was the aftermarket alarm on the 87. I never had a problem with water in electrical stuff. No guarantees.
