I use stuff called Purple Power. Its like Simple Green without the suckage. Environmentally safe, dont need gloves, smells nice, tears through grease and grime better than brake cleaner and Simple Green and all that junk.
I use it for car stuff, but I gave it to my mom one day to try and she now uses nothing but it for stove and oven cleaning, cleaning her countertops, kitchen floor, etc. She says it works better than even the harsh skin killing stove and oven cleaners.
I will get a picture of the bottle. I googled for Purple Power and found lots of results, but the label was different looking so im not sure.

Old school "Gunk" works well too. Be sure to cover up the distrib., batt, and other electrical components.
Spray on, let soak, wash off... For details, the other products mentioned in the thread work well.

I use meguirs rubbershine on everything to keep it looking good. Spray it on everything and wipe away after. Sometimes a degreaser and brush on the intake manifold.
