Default Ball Joint disassembly - 1st one was easy, 2nd one....#$%@#

Ben (87944turbo) gave me a set of late control arms for my late offset swap and Im replacing the ball joints with rennbays track kit. 1st ball joint came apart easy just as the directions say - looks fine, should be simple to redo.

Second one was more of a pain - got the circlip out, took off the cover and then there was another seal and smaller looking cover....and it wont budge. (No spring in this one)

The other one fell out once the backing/spring was out. I have smacked the crap out of it with an impact hammer, put it in a vice with a socket on the end of the pin, etc...

Is this joint not rebuildable? Did someone use some strange rebuild kit in the past?

Here are some pics, thanks.

That arm looks like it was rebuilt with a pressed in ball joint, it is not rebuildable.

Sam, I've got arm(s) sitting in the race car trailer if you need one.

Me personally, I would keep going to see what is needed to remove it, but then I like blowing stuff up too...

Cool, I usually destroy anything that can't be re-used by someone else, which I am finding is most of what I replace on my cars...

Sam, be sure to save the circlip and reuse it when rebuilding the control arm. It's a lot stronger than most replacements you will find.

Yah, I just went through this with my car. We had to press the old ball joint out and the hole had been hogged out and an aftermarket ball joint installed. I got it out, but the replacement joints slopped around in the hole.

Got another control arm that had the original ball joint and everything worked fine.

944T owners should be aware that the rebuilders mostly trash the control arm to install the wrong but cheaper ball joint.

At the time I was cursing, but I guess I should consider myself lucky I had original stuff inside when I did mine...

It took my mechanic about 3 hours to take mine off, rebuild them with the Rennbay kit and put them on again...charged me only $150, gave him $20 tip...car is tight!! Love that Kit Rennbay!

Look for the little triangle on the bottom of the ball joint - that means it is rebuildable as I recall...

I've known him for over 10 years and he did it at my place after work in the evening, plus he changed a control arm which had a crack on it!
