Default Best way to replace Headers?

My brother has cracked headers on his Turbo S and we unbolted them everywhere and they slide around but obviously not off because there is not enough room.

What is the best/easiest way to take them off?
Unbolting passenger engine mount and tilting the engine?

Search doesent work right and I couldnt find a answer, I know its probably been asked before.

Remove some or all of the studs by double nutting, and the headers will come right out the top.

Correct, unbolt the motor mount and jack that side of the motor up. I also found it somewhat useful to pry between the strut tower and the head to gain some extra clearance. I dont know if that is the bightest thing but it worked for me.

Why? I have removed headers sevral times, there is plenty of room to take them off. Just use your time to figure out how to do it.

olli,

The idea of asking the question was to find out if there was a faster, more efficient way, to remove them without taking lots of time.

If you unbolt the motor mounted then you can take the headers out by only removing the first and last stud. Depending on the condition of the studs, this is sometimes a better option over risking a broken or stripped head stud.

If most the studs come out easily then it is easier to do that without touching the motor mount.

While on this subject I had a devil of a time getting mine off when breaking the car down. Now that I’m going back together I’m thinking the heck with the studs. Anyone just used stainless socket (Allen) head bolts instead?
Right now I’ve discovered one of my headers had a tube completely come unwelded. I’ve drilled out the spot welds and removed the heat shield. I’m welding it back up today and thinking I’ll just wrap it with some JEGS exhaust heat wrap I bought and forget reinstalling the head shield (more room, less trouble). And last; headers on before engine goes in? Any advice on my non-factory fixes appreciated.

A lot of people use allen head bolts on them after they have had the fun of removing with the studs. Sounds like a good plan of attack.

Much better off using studs then bolts. Bolts are a good way to strip the holes in the head.

hummm. Didn't think about the strip out. Guess you mean when / if after several heat cycles went back off again? Wouldn't think a problem when going back together if all threads chased and new bolts. Guess if planning for the future could use an end mill and make holes slots to the bottom side; so could loosen and slide up next time if used studs.

I just removed my headers......twice! Due to being sold a supposed leak free set that were not! Mine would not come straight out with the studs out, we had to remove the clutch master cylinder and some other bits that were in the way as well as loosen the engine mount off and jack the engine up on one side, but my car is RHD and a 968 so it didnt help!

RHD. Wow, never thought about that problem. With engine canted that way plus exhaust I just can't imagine how the mechanics would fit. Send a pic sometime. I'm sure that is a very tight layout.

Depends on the car --- e.g., headers, studs, fender liner, motor mount health, etc....

OK so my bros car is stock. We have unbolted both of the engine mounts from the bottom and try lifting the car at the oilpan from the bottom and the whole car still lifts. We have tried evrything without pulling the studs and nothing is working and we dont want to risk pulling the studs because if one of them breaks then we are screwed!
