I would go to 17s, and get the best tire you can in the widest size you can fit on the wheels you get and still fit under the fender (255 rears/225 front is a popular combo) OR get the widest tire you can fit on your 16 inch rims while looking for a nice set of 17s...

Well, it turns out I won't be getting tires at all! Just got an estimate back for fixing what I thought was just moderate damage to the front driver side bumper/fender and it came to more than I paid for the car! So I will probably be parting with the whole car now. Thank you for the great advice though, when I get another one (and I am sure I will) this will come in handy!

Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 (The ONLY tires I can find in this size)
Front: 225/50R16
Rear: 245/45R16

or

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec (arguably the best rated tires in this size)
Front: 205/55R16
Rear: 225/50R16

So now my question becomes: is it better to get superior tires in a narrower size (Dunlop) or inferior tires in a wider size (Hankook)? Whats your opinions?
I had the Hankooks and just got Fuzion ZRIs in:
Front: 225/50R16
Rear: 245/45R16
