Anybody driven SR20det 240sx?
Alright,
I sold my 951 about 3 months back and bought an SRT4 about a year ago....Love the car, however don't like the crowd it attracts. I'm young too (23) however too many ricers have found these cars which is a shame because they truely are a great bang for the buck...
This summer I'm looking to buy a 240sx with the SR20 swapped in. Been wanting one for years now, and they are going for really inexpensive prices...
My question: In your experience, how did you like the power of these motors versus the 951? Mine was lightly modded, and I plan on doing light mods to the sr as well.
Thanks
Jared

the stock SR20det is nothing special even in a 240sx. The motors are nice though because they can handle a lot of power and from my under standing the transmissions used are fairly strong as well.
I have been in a sr20det swapped 240 with an intake and exhaust and it is similar to a stock 944 turbo, but doesnt handle as well.

Hmm...
Yea, well I am trying to get back into a RWD turbo really soon. The redtop is about the same as far as HP figures compared to a stock non-S.
An RB is def > than SR...But not when you need replacement parts haha. Thanks for the insight guys, anybody else?!?!
Sorry if some of you don't think this thread belongs here, but I'm trying to get some constructive insight not necessarily comparing the two cars handling wise, but more-so motor/reliability wise

I like how the S14 240sx's look
a sr20det stock swapped (maybe exhaust and intake) would be about the same straight line with a stock non S 951 (over 100 might be a diff story). braking is horrible, turning is nothing special
Edit: I will note, the sr20 motor is as easy to make power out of as the 951. Bigger turbo, injectors, and a clean fuel map you are over 300 hp at the wheels. They are much easier to work on than the 951 motor though.

Just like any car, I can appreciate one that is well done.
Heres a good example(I think I remember seeing it in a semi recent import tuner):
Too bad most of them look like this:

One of my buddies has a s14 240 with a stockish RB25 in it.... while I love the engine (the sound is incredible) it really feels like a big engine shoehorned into a car not capable of handling it. The car is underbraked with even the 300ZX brakes and an upgraded suspension......and he prefers my 951 (which is a HUGE thing for him to admit)
I don't think an SR20 240 would be nearly as fun as the RB25, which got old for me after the first 50 miles.
I will say it is ALOT easier to work on, parts cost seem comparable but harder to get. I don't know the story on the SR20DET, but I'd imagine its even easier to work on..

I used to have an s14 240sx, but with stock motor. The sr swap is supposedly pretty easy and inexpensive, but another good option in my opinion is to turbo the ka24de motor. There are lots of good options for this, from junkyard turbos to complete aftermarket kits.
My main gripes with the 240 was that the body was flimsy and rusted badly, and the seats were awful (uncomforable). Plus it has the "squashed jelly bean" look. The first time I parked my 240 next to a clean 944, I fell in love with those fenders.
If you're going to get an s14, get an SE model, which should have LSD and 5-lug hubs standard. On the plus side, maintenance, repairs, and aftermarket parts are MUCH cheaper than for the 944/51.
