240s are a good starting point. **** for interiors but a good place to start. Great after market support but you will have to wade through a lot of BS to get a good setup and known good parts.

two of my buddies from college have/had some stupid (good stupid) 240s
one is a Q45 v8 with a single turbo + 300zx 5spd. i think it is over 500rwhp at only 5psi, still under construction
other was sr20det with a huge turbo. like +750rwhp at +30psi, now sold
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDzomql1wEE
video is old small turbo. i rode in the car, stupid fast and scary honestly
both fabbed and built in their own garages
fun cars for sure

I had a 1978 280Z with a NA Skyline inline six installed with proper suspension about 22 years ago. That car had no lsd, but upgraded brakes and suspension. The chassis of the early to 78 cars could be made to handle very well.
I sold it for a song and purchased a 1985.5 NA 944. The 944 was such a better car back then as compared to the na z offerings and what I sold. I've been a fan of both cars since.
Tim, post up some of your ricers. OT, but love to see picts of fun cars.
