There are 3 main reasons I do not care for their amps. This is not to say it is a bad product, because it is not. It is an effective CA amplifier but this is what points me in other directions:

#1. The cost. The McIntosh Labs MCC602 amplifier (600 watt amp~2x300@4ohm) has an MSRP of $3,500.00. For comparison purposes my two Alpine PDX 4.150 (600amp) cost only $485 each and the performance numbers bewteen the 2 are nearly identical, with the exception of P efficiency (#3)

#2. The size and weight. The MCC602 weighs nearly 50lbs and is over 2 feet in length and over 1 foot in width. In comparison the Alpine PDX is 10"x9".

#3. The efficiency rating of the MCC602 was a bit over %50 at peak power into 2 ohm load. This is almost 20% lower than most amplifiers in the A class. It performed well at B class rating, but for $3.5k I would think total spectrum encompassment would not be too much to ask for.

Just my .02

Good points. If cost is the factor, your right on. Didnt know the mcc602 was that heavy. Known for long life, and reliability no? How much of that MCC602 weight is gold?

Can I play?
Head unit – Alpine IDA X001
Sound processing – Alpine KTX-100EQ
A bunch of Alpine Amps
Dynaudio Speakers in door and rear quarter (long time favorites)
12” DVC subwoofer mounted is a custom transmission line enclosure
Its not a pimpin’ SPL set up – its very flat and clean (it will get pretty loud too!)

Not a fan of Clarion... Had one in a Honda and it was only okay... Plus I seem to associate it with ricer cars...

What about a Porsche CD-220 or CDR-220 head unit?

I currently have 2 Alpine 7949s and two digital processors that I plan on selling so I can run either the Pioneer or the Clarion.

As for running McIntosh and big LCD headunits, I highly do not recommend it unless you can hide it (half the fun is showing off the McIntosh anyway). A decent headunit with a decent component set with a single 10/12" sub and one or two small amps is all you will ever need. All of that can be hidden and the rear glass is perfect for projecting the bass around.

Aura made a solid amp. The company was bought out so there is stock left to be had and cheap. This would do perfect, especially running active crossovers through one of the headunits I mentioned (or bridged passive 2x150):

What processors do you have? I may be interested.

I nearly pulled the trigger on a CD400 but went with this instead and 4x MB Quart DKD 4x6 speakers. Whole system eventually pieced together from eBay and www.swstereo.com - Sounds great, even loud, and is highly recommended. Total spend was about $400.

I have the CD-220 in my car, but it needs to be modified to be used in a 944.

The unit is intended to be used in a Boxster or 996, so the viewing angle for the display is wrong when you put it in the 944 (can't see anything). I had my faceplate modified by a Rennlister in the Pacific NW for ~$40.

I also opted to get the iPod aux-in from Becker Autosound. Charges my phone and streams music perfectly.

Not as full featured as some of the new head units, but it gets the job done and looks period correct.
