Default 1986 944 garaged and won't start

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum. I am an active member of the Dodge Turbo Diesel forum and do most of the maintenance and repairs on my 99' Dodge Ram2500 diesel. I just received a 1986 944 that has been garaged for 2yrs. I have all the shop manuals for the car. It truns over but won't start. It appears that it may not be getting fuel. I want to check the fuel filter and fuel pump but am not sure what jack points to use and where t put the jack stands. If anyone can give me a diredtion for raising the car and also where to start with making sure it is getting fuel it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Keith

You should do a quick search

A few things that are quick to check are
change out DME relay or make jumper
is tach bouncing when turning over? If not check S/R sensors
if so the injectors may be stuck ..very common when sitting
Use the 3 wire jumper to eliminate some things (noted above)
you may also have a bad fuel pump from sitting so long

if it does start don't run it you will need to change t-belt right away

Jack points are on either side of the car, 1 under each detent in the rocker panel, and then 1 each in front of and behind the center one ALL 3 are under the rocker panel, for jack stands I use the frame rails in the front and rear (you can see them once you jack up the car and look...

Is the tachometer jumping a little while turning it over?
Is there fuel in the fuel rail, you can check in the front. Where from Ny are you, I might be able come by and help you.

probably a DME relay or a timing/reference sensor on the bellhousing. I usually support the rear of the car on jackstands where the torsion bar cap is and the front under the cup things just inside of the front fenders.

Do not know if the car is a turbo or not or if both motors suffer the same issues. A quick thing you can check is to make sure the set screw for the ingnition rotor is still tight or on. I have seen these backing out and the rotor not spinning preventing the car from starting. A VERY quick way to see it it firing without taking anything off is attaching a timing light to the plug wires and turning it over- no light flash no power going to the plugs. Easy to check.... Another easy to check- swap is the FP relay (there is on in the 951 correct....or is this a DME function with the ignition on....?) . If a new one does not do anything throw it in the glove box for later.

Just a thought.- Cheers, Mike

What is the R/S sensor? I can't find any referencein the manual that will fit that abbreviation. I assume the T-belt is the timing belt and is that something I can change myself.
Thanks, Keith

R & S sensors are the reference and speed sensors located just above the flywheel. I believe you should see the tachometer needle bouncing while cranking the engine if all is good there. I'd be checking the basics first - fuel and spark. They should lead you in the right direction ...

Battery is good. Fuel is Good. Tach does not jump or move at all when cranking. Removed DME relay and jumped contacts and still no start.
