real 951 trans cooler
Thought I'd post a couple of pics of one of the winter projects I'm trying to get done before next weekend. It's a "conventional" tranny cooler with oil pump/filter/heat exchanger/fans...
It's almost done. Just have to wire it up tomorrow.
I cut out 8" of the spare tire well, welded in a plate, and the rest is somewhat obvious. It's hard to see the heat exchanger/electric fans because of the angle of the light, and the fact that they are covered by the rear difuser.
And BTW, I've been wanting to cut out that spare tire well for a long time. It's in the way!

Tony, what gave you the impression that your tranny needed extra cooling? Or didn't it have any external cooling so you decided to come up with this more substantial model?
Looks good.

Hey all...
There are three reason to do this type of cooler. They are:
1. There's a real oil filter installed in (on) the transmission. The benefits of that are obvious.
2. I know for sure that plenty of heat will be removed from the oil under track conditions. Tight LSD differentials will heat up the transmission oil considerably.
3. I don't need to find a 951 transmission with a cooler (or an LSD) should this one blow up. Now I can use any 951 transmission with or without the cooler and just slip in my expensive GT Racing differential!
On a side note, I have seen several transmissions, with factory oil coolers, with discolored bearings inside. This could mean many things. But discolored bearings typically means they got hot. At least I know that I can rule out overheating of bearings due to oil temps (whether or not that's the case).
Lastly, I wanted to cut out the spare tire well (8" of it) because it's just in the way. Now I can back out the transmission, get the transmission in easier, and have more room move things around. Plus... there's room to install the oil cooler/pump... which didn't exist before.

I have always wanted to a diffuser on these cars. But the problem is the gas tank. It's in the way. So too is the muffler... but that's a relatively easy fix.
The tank not so much. Where do you put it? A) I don't want it in the passenger compartment, and B) I don't want to move it up high.
Therein lies the issue.

Looks amazing Tony any idea of temp drop compared to the stock one?
On a side note does anyone have the dimensions of the part of the cooler which slips into the trans? I might try to make a fitting in the school machine shop
