have parroted this a few times over the years but...

my NA with me in it (220 at the time), full tank of gas (17 gal early car), spare tire, tool kit, some other junk, full stock interior, radio and working AC was right at 3000lbs.
subtract me, gas, tools, tire, etc and its about 2630 dry.
that's an early car with the steel trailing arms which are about 30lbs heavier overall than 951 stuff.
and 50lbs of NA cast iron brake calipers vs 951 stuff which is half that or better.

add what, 100 lbs? for a turbo+IC+WG+related stuff and youre looking at 2730...but no cage.
i dont know where they hid all the fat in late chassis...but they ARE fat.

I would say closer to 200 lbs with crossover pipe, down pipe, turbo itself, turbo mount, oil cooler, IC, IC pipes, and waste gate.

They have a lot of sound deadening material on the outside of the body under the front fenders which probably weigh in about 50 lbs. But yeah the tub is pretty heavy.

One of the RL on here built a tube frame around the tub and used a lot of fiberglass. I think he got down around 2200 I think he was shooting for 2,000.

early cars have the heavily-coated fenders and general underbody too.
i forgot that my weight included a big oil cooler (10x the size of the stock 951 unit) and about 10 ft of stainless lines.

i totally forgot about the crossover/downpipe and brackets and stuff though, thanks for the reminder.

Do early cars even have electric sunroof and/or rear wiper..?

But yeah, 6 way power seats, central locking, abs, air bags, adds up.

elec sunroof was standard from '84, and about half the 83's ive seen had it too.
my 85 had it originally but i went manual.
rear wiper probably optional but i've only ever even seen maybe 3-4 examples in my life.

My 1989 Turbo Cup in this pic is 100% factory spec and weigh in at 1160kg dry. Yes the motorsport departement did alot to cut weight but nothing that is very hard to replicate. It is all steel and glass except for the glassfiber hood. So I think that getting a 951 down to even 1100kg should not be to BIG a challenge which is pretty light I think and even with a stock motor that will be a very fast car.

A friend of mine has a 951 racecar that looks very stock that weighs 975kg! Very clean nice car with a 470hp 3liter. It is for sale if anyone wants a 996 Cup beater😀 Ofcoarse it is here in Sweden.

975 kg is truly amazing - that's less than a somewhat-lightened Miata! Could you share some details about what he did? It does look pretty stock (other than the aero stuff) on the outside, aside from the solid roof. I'm sure it goes without saying that any of these super-light efforts start with a car that stripped to the bare chassis, and then only the bare minimum wiring and mechanical parts are put back on. It probably also means lightening the chassis considerably before putting a full cage in. How do you know how much metal is safe to cut out of the chassis? I also assume that getting down to 975 kg means replacing all the body panels with fiberglass or carbon fiber, and of course all the glass with lexan.

Cant miss this!

Cloud 968. This car is as trick as it gets. The owner like me likes his cars to look as close to stock as possible but still update it to match modern racecars.
Fit and finish of this car is top notch!
Yes the body has been lightened as much as possible. Rear floor cut out and now CF, roof CF, all panels, doors, bumbers, diffusor is either CF or glasfiber. All lexan windows, front screen heated lexan like new Cup cars. CF daschboard, Standalone with only the necesary wiring. Lightweight hollow driveshafts, aluminium torque tube, The list goes on.
He is a very seasoned driver and dominated super saloon in the - 80:s with a very trick selfbuilt tubular camaro. He is now 61 and mostly race historic and time attack.

Thanks for the info - very interesting, and amazing how he has managed such radical mods while keeping the car looking relatively stock, other than the aero stuff, and even that isn't all that radical-looking, other than the large wing..

I got my scales today, and I plan to weigh the car this Saturday. Here's what I've done to lighten it (1992 968):

-Sparco Evo drivers seat, some sort of Corbeau fixed-back fiberglass racing seat on the passenger side that I bought used. Carbeau seat weighs 19 lbs, Sparco about 17 lbs plus mounting hardware, for a total weight savings of about 65 kbs. I bolted the Corbeau directly to the floor, so no mounting hardware on the passenger side.
- Fiberglass hood, with aluminum louvers. Removed struts, but kept hinges and latches. I'm guessing total of 10-15 lb savings
- 4 lb Battery Tender battery
- Fixed headlights (featherweight Hella bi-halogens) ~30 lb savings
- Removed front bumper bar - 15 lb savings
- Removed fog lights, and replaced with fiberglass brake duct scoops
- Removed rear bumper bar - 20 lb savings
- Removed windshield washer reservoir - 12 lb savings
- Removed cruise control
- Removed passenger side air bag and control module
- Removed the surprisingly heavy eyelets that I think were used to strap the car down on the boat ride from Germany
- Converted electric sunroof to manual
- Removed stereo and speakers (almost always drive with the sunroof off, so I can't hear it, anyway) - Saved about 12 lbs
- Removed AC compressor, radiator, drier, and assorted plumbing, Built my own brackets to relocate the alternator to the A/C compressor’s spot – Saved about 25 lb.
- Removed fuel rail cover
- Removed rear seat
- Removed rear quarter interior panels, cargo area carpet and pad
- Removed rear window wiper and motor
- Removed hatch opener motor (converted to manual operation)
- Removed spare tire, jack, and tools
- Replaced stock exhaust with RS Barn cat back
- Single-mass aluminum flywheel – 17 lb, I believe

I added a half cage, Racers Edge heavy duty control arms, a Design1 Racing strut brace and caster block brace, and it has 1989 TurboS calipers and Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors

The car is listed at 3086 lb stock. Anybody want to hazard a guess as to what it weighs now? Whoever comes closest wins - what, I don't know, other than some oohs and aahs...

Single-mass flywheel - is this still the 968 motor?

Yes - the standard 3.0 liter. I replaced the stock dual-mass flywheel with a Fidanza aluminum one. I didn't experience the slightest reduction in driveability, just a bit of a rattle around 2200 rpm, particularly on deceleration.
