Default Smoke under the hood & ATF Observation

Boy I hate leaky seals... The axel housing on my turbo is lightly oiled and I believe oil is leaking form the o-ring #11 in photo below. Is this a correct assumption? When the engine warms up I can see smoke comming up from right behind the TPS. I really have no inclination to thear this apart now and rebuild everything, replacing this o-ring would simply involve removing the intake manifold?

Just to add a note, I still haven't replaced this seal, however I did perform an ATF flush of the engine and noticed no leaks from this seal, it's probably a temporary thing but I suspect the ATF caused the o-ring to swell and seal again... weird.

Thanks

Not too hard to change the o-ring, just requires removal of the intake manifold as you mentioned. When you unbolt the oil feed line, just be careful not to flex the braided line too much to avoid cracking the line on the inside

Well I verified it is the oil supply line last night, I cleaned the are up really well with brake clean and after blowing the area out with compressed air started it up and after ~5minutes I had oil seeping onto the turbo axel housing. Car is an 87 w/ 117,000 km (72.5k mi). I also noticed the turbo electric water pump is gushing as well... guess i'll do that too. I love old cars.

Mine has 120,000 miles but the turbo was rebuild at some point and the coolant pump was replaced too.

I got a decent amount of smoke the other day so I guess its time for me to think about replacing this ring. Smoke would appear near the headers but the fans were running. Does the intake need to come off or just the TB?

The headers are on the other side of the engine, the downpipe is in the vicinity... unless you mean the intake runners are headers??? I would remove the intake manifold so you can loosen the bolt (#29) on the oil line and rotate it up and out with out bending and breaking it.

Yes the fans were blowing the smoke around. Thanks for the tip! I hope sharky still sells those custom intake studs.

I just finished the R&R yesterday, the old gasket was red, new one is green, you wil have to completely remove the oil pipe (#10) from the turbo and balance shaft cover to do this job correctly. The head on the banjo bolt (#29) is a 19mm, the manual also says to replace the crush rings, which I did. To hold the lower crush ring against the balance shaft cover whilst replacing the line use a couple small dabs of grease.

HTH,

Jason

I'm also getting a slow leak over there, although mine is not to the point of burning. I'll be doing this when I replace good ol' K26. Thanks for the info.

Besides that, i've got plenty of other oil leaks to deal with. And then there's the power steering pump and reservoir...
