Heads up 951 vs 928 S4 in Excellence

Pete,
I have nice story for you. 14 year old (yep the kid is 14, can't drive the tow vehicle, but can race a 944) races a 944 spec car solo in a 3 hour enduro to finish second in class where 8 cars started.

I agree, I like the V8 and the suspension can be made nice, but the body is so ugly. Its like a wide 924. Only one I would get is a GT or GTS because theyre the least slab sided.

Funny thing is , the test car was a 5 spd. Tested in 1987 to do a 0-60 in a spry 5.3 secs by a couple mags. Porsche announced it could do it in 5.5( they are known to be conservative) Your test announced 6.1. which is the automatic's time. I personally track tested mine when stock at 5.3 secs. Of course now I do it in 3.7. It takes a very skilled driver to wring a 5.5 out of the 951, and stock for stock the 5spd. s4 will always car-length 951 0-60. That's a fact.

I have both a 951 and a 928 (I also have a 968 and multiple 944's... lol). I think the author got it right, altho if my 951 had been the test car, I am sure we could have changed the outcome. Between a stock S4 and a stock 951S, the 928 exudes more "Porscheness". A modded 928 against my 951, tho... now THAT would be a fun test!
If I had to pick my favorite car to drive? My '84 944. It has perfect balance (yes, even with the low power) and represents the most all around "fun to drive" factor for me. I've driven 944's, 951's 968's and my (well, its technically my wifes, but whos keeping track) 928 across the country on numerous times. I can tell you that I'd much rather take a 944 series (944, 951, 968, take your pick) over the 928 on a long trip, due in part to the gas mileage and part due to the feel of driving the car, less drama driving a 944. Nothing wrong with anyone that disagrees.
Good job, Pete! I hope you keep those articles coming!
Regards,

A well written article indeed, I take no exception with the author saying his personal preference. He acknowledges that the 951 is a better driver's car, whereas he'd rather the plush 928. I have no problems with that. I'd love to have a 32V 928 engine in my 944, even investigated their transaxles for awhile as well. But I would never own one, hate the spaceship styling (as I've said time and time again).
Most of us just don't care?

928, 944, 911, 914, cayman, boxster?
i'll take all of them
i just got a old 928 project car and its fun because more people look at it and know its a porsche and make comments, etc. and know its a more expensive porsche than a 944, its more like driving a jaguar or a ferrari... for the envy factor a 928 wins because many people associate a round rear end with porsche and are stupid and think bigger is better.
i still love a 944turbo body that is slightly lowered in the back with some big 18" wheels that are spaced properly more than any other car in the world. but if the 944 is not setup right it looks like a lawn mower, where a 928 never will.

Love it, the best car I've owned. Personally, I'd never own an e34 again (E34 525iT, E34 525i, E34 M5). But for a turbo/extreme project I would rock an e34 M again. Good to 700whp on stock internals

I guess when the new Panamera (modern 928) comes out they will have to run it against the new M5/M6.

This is true, everybody remembers the 928 as a Porsche in the movie Risky Business but nobody really remembers the Porsche 944 in Sixteen Candles driven by the character Jake Ryan. This is only because Tom Cruise isn't it, and the car played no real role in that movie.

Although the 928, I think s or s4, had a nice burn out in front of the mall during the movie Weird Science.

I wouldn't mind a 928. Just last week in fact I was looking at one at my buddy's shop. It's been gathering dust in his place for years, and the owner's a bit of a character. I told him if the guy ever throws in the towel and tells them to get rid of it for him, make me the first call.

Yes, Wierd Science was cool but does the 928 engine really sound like that in real life? How about the 928's sound in Risky Business? Both movies make the car sound like a F1 or an RS Spyder. Gotta admit, that dude driving the red Ferarri is a damn good driver(you know that part where he slides around the corner and almost hits the parents).
As for the 944 in 16 Candles, Im still in love with the 944 but I almost forgot about Molly until just now.
I love all the Porsche cars and wouldnt mind driving a 928. However, I feel the poor man's Porsche with a poor man's aluminum old school 432cui sbc will be more fun that at the autoX than more expensive cars. Or a 3.0L with a G31 for the stiff gears would be a blast on the street too.
