951 max tire width
Looking to get some new tires for the 951 with 16in rims. Stock it fits 205 in front 225 in back. Could/would I want to go wider then that for a street car that sees the occasional autox?
I'd like to get 225/245 or something but I don't know what the width of the stock rims are and what I could safely put on there.
I have done some searches and it looks like it is possible on the 8in rims but not the 7s...

Decrease in mpg? I don't think so, the width agvantage affect the height as well, so I think it balances out, I run 225/245 and have no problem, better grip and traction definitely...maybe not as smooth as the 205/225 set up, but worth it..

Just wondering but with a 225/245 set up what do you guys run as far as sidewalls?
I was looking at the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires but they only come in 50 sidewalls.

225/50 and 245/45 x 16 Yoko AVS Sport (bought a year ago, no longer available) on stock Phone Dials. These replaced my old 205/55 and 225/50 Pirelli P-Zero (original version). I think the Pirellis had more grip, but the new larger sizes compensate for most of it. Not that it matters, but the larger size on the rear looks pretty cool when viewed from the rear of the car. Of course, wider wheels with 275s would look even better.
These sizes (in combination) are getting hard to get in many tire choices. Most manufacturers are concentrating on 17 - 19" when it comes to performance tires. (Try finding good performance tires in 15", like I did when I replaced the very old dry-rotted Pirelli P7s on my TR7. I ended up with some Dunlop Sport 9000s.) Michelein Pilot Sport Cups are my first choice, but they're relatively expensive. For inexpensive tires, check out Toyo, Nitto, or Kumho. They're pretty popular with the Japanese tuner crowd, but I consider them lower end. Maybe I'm just biased against them because, when they hit the market, there were still many other tires which were much better.

Three Wheelin'
I'm using Hankook RS-2 in 225/50 and 245/45 on phonedials. I have a little under 2K miles on them and am very happy so far (especially for the money).

I run (R) 275-40/17 on 10" and (F) 255-40/17 on 9" and still get 25mpg. I haven't noticed any uneven wear yet in 10K miles. You will get a bit more tramlining with the larger tires on certain grooved/worn pavements or steeply crowned roads. I even get it sometimes where they abrasive blast the old lane marking paint and it leaves a rougher strip of asphalt.

I do like the idea of wider tires, but I was looking at the highest rated tire on tirerack is the Bridgestone RE-01Rs but they don't make them in 245wide. I am now stuck trying to decided if I would get better performance with the high rated bridgestone, or get slightly wider tire with quite a bit lower ratings.

I routinely run a 245/35 in the front and a 285/30 in the rear...went to a 295 in the rear for my last track weekend and really liked how the car handled.
