Default Tire size help..

Ok I have been talking with several people and still cant decide what tire size to go with. I have an 86 944 turbo. I just bought some new rims and need to find the right tires for the front and rear.

The front rims are 8.5x18 and the rear are 10x18.

I am leaning towards a 285/30/18 rear. But what can I fit on the front? What ever I get I want to make sure they will not rub at all.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Jusitn

I'm sure you could get 255/35s on there. I have them on my 9" fronts and it's very low and I don't get rub although I have pretty a pretty firm suspension setup. Check the guides on Tirerack. They show what size rims the tyres can be fitted to. Oh, I have 285/30s rear too. No probs.

Justin, with the right offset you should be able to fit a 255/35 no probs. worst case a 235/40 would look pretty beefy on there too! whatever the case post pics of those wheels as soon as they're in your possession!

i would go 245/265 or 275- make the stagger closer. Better handling and less worry about rubbing and tramlining...but what do i know.

I agree. You don't want them too far apart in widths. 255/285 should be fine. Be careful though about the rolling radius of the tyre. Often the fronts can be bigger than the rears and you don't want too much differnece there either. Again, info available on places like Tirerack etc.

Well it quite possibly doesn't matter that much if you're just cruising around on the street, but with your upgrades introducing some pretty serious power you might want to get the widths a bit closer. Having said that, if they've been working fine to date then just ignore me. The common school of thought is that our cars have built in understeer. In fact probably more than 90% of all road cars do as well. You will see big staggers on rear engined Porsches, but that's because they have so much of their weight over the back wheels. With our virtual 50/50 balance it makes sense to also have more parity with our wheels/tyres. As you would know, many racers actually use the same size front and rear on 944 cars. This may also be partially a financial decision, but even looking at more top end guys like Hans B, he uses almost the same front to rear for his dedicated trackcar. I will be most probably using 285 all round next season for the track. Even now with 255/285 I get a fair bit of understeer, and I'm trying to figure out the best way of dialing that out. Mostly slow to medium speed corners, but it's really annoying. What size are your front wheels John?

I think you should try something a bit wider on the front John. If you've got 8.5" you should be able to go up to a 255/35 I think.

255/35 for an 8.5" rim.

I run with pca in the San Diego region. We're the largest and most active in the country with 2600+ members and year round racing weather.
As you might imagine, there are a ton (more than 50?) 944 track cars being run here. I only know of 1 guy that runs staggered wheel/tire sizes, and he has an understeer problem.
You do the math.
btw I'm running 275/40/17's on 9" rims with good balance.
