Default Spacer Question - 17x8.5 & 10 Fikse's on an '86

I did a pretty extensive search in the archives but couldn't quite find an answer.

I have a set of Fikse FM-10's that I am trying to get mounted on my '86. The wheels are:

17 x 8.5 - 50mm offset
17 x 10 - 56mm offset

I'm going to be running 235-45 x 17 tires in the front and 275-40 x 17 tires in the rear. Does anybody know what size spacers I will need to use?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I cant help you directly, but I can recommend that you find the wheels thread and look for someone running 8.5" front and 10" rear widths and then go and do the math.

For example: if a guy fit a 17x8.5 et43 on his 86, then you would need a 7mm spacer up front and theoretically, it should work.

Gabe, call Vic. He is a wheel fitment encyclopedia. He'll tell you what spacer you need and probably knows where to find the best deal on them too. Seems like everyone is getting new wheels these days.

Actually none, because you are going to sell me those wheels But seriously:

Technically 28mm rear...21mm front.

Although you can just use 1" all the way around...it did not make any difference as a few mm's are...well...just a few mm's. Mine fit fine either way and I tried both.

VERTEX AUTO (site sponsor) has some great bolt on spacers...CNC Aluminum, great work, great pricing and an absolute breeze to install.

Kyle your car is looking great! Good to see it back up and running after the fire. I need to see those wheels and wing in person, I've been considering getting a CPRacing wing as well.

CPR: Thanks for the info. That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure before I ordered some spacers. I'm looking forward to buying one of your splitters. I just installed an AIR one tonight and I know it's only going to be a matter of time before it gets cracked and broken. Thanks for all your hard work getting them into production!

If you are going to track the car consider 245/40/17 on the front. You'll get more bite. Also, if you run 235, consider a 40 profile. It's smaller diameter and lower profile seems to help on turn in with my set up. My Avitar photo shows 1 degree of positive rake and 235/40/17 on the front, 275/40/17 rear.

I have the Fikse FM5's in the same sizes as you, but I have no idea what the offsets are, as they came with the car. Sorry. BTW, I am not running spacers. If I can can find out quickly I'll let you know. Going to Toyo R888's for the track in 245/40/17 and 275/40/17 in a few days... the fronts will still be 1" smaller diameter than the rears. We'll see how they perform.

Rickamurphy,

Thanks for the input. I will definitely be going up to 245's once I use up the 235's that came with the wheels. I plan on autocrossing the car with this setup and maybe doing a track event so thanks for the ideas about getting more grip.

I see you have an '86 as well so I'm guessing your FM5's are the early offset. I wanted a set of early offset FM10's so I wouldn't have to use spacers but they were hard to come across unless I ordered new. Hopefully someday I'll find a set. If you happen to find the offsets of your FM5's that would be great if you could post them so I can reference them for future wheels.

Patrick, thanks for the compliments. I need to get a new avatar pic up though since my car looks totally different with everything I've added. I agree, I really like the clear corners on the Guards Red cars as well. Haha, damn near everything you are making I'm going to have to buy...clear corners, 3 piece wing, splitter....

I emailed Fikse asking them to track my serial number so that I could archive my offset numbers, we'll see what happens...as soon as I know, I will post here and PM you.

For a data point, I have 9x17 front with 6" backspacing, and 10x17 Rear with 7" backspacing CCW wheels with 255 front and 275 rears. The fronts fit perfectly. The rears rub slightly on the forward inside of the wheel well when cornering hard. This is on an 86 with no spacers.

Thanks. The front wheels are 8.5" and the rears are 10". The Yoki's in the photo have an 11" patch, but measure 12.5" to the sidewalls, so they look mean. The new 888's have an even wider patch, so I can't wait to see them mounted. Going to 245's on the front. Also, the fronts are about an inch smaller in diameter than the rears and that contributes to the look as well.

A friend at Farnbacher Loles walked me through "rake" on lowered 944's and I did what he said. Makes a big difference on turn-in and seems more settled at speed on the straights; plus it looks real nice. It's now set it at 1 degree positive. The whole car is lowered so the top of the rear tire is up under the fender by about an inch, can't even get a finger up under there! That adds to the mean look too.

I like the set up a lot; has a hint of understeer, which I like.

Thanks man.

FIKSE called and told me the off-set numbers:

8.5" fronts are +37mm
10" rears are +30mm

Ohiostate944, I hope that helps you. FYI, I have room to run 285's in the rear but can't find tires in that size in DOT-R, though they would fit the wheels. I have room to run the 245's in the front, but I would need spacers to go 255 or bigger.
