i might have to get that. I can feel my tranny moving on takeoff and shifts. I is even worse when the tires start to spin on wet pavement.

Sorry for the newbie question: Is it easy to swap the trans mounts with car on jackstands?

Yes, you should be able to do it in an hour or 2.

If you are looking for a compromise that works well on both street and track I would go with these. They stop the slop but instead of being solid and transmitting all of the noise, they have much harder bushes to absorb some of the noise transmitted back to the body. The same company does a engine mount that also has these harder bushes in them:

Expensive, but imo the best there is out there. Available from these guys: http://stores.ebay.com/DPS-Porsche-Parts

I was thinking about trying something similar to what Brian did with a stock mount. My friend did that with the stock motor mounts on his Evo8 (filled with PU) and it stiffened them up. Popular mod for them. Anyhow i guess what it comes down to.. do i pay $150 for a solid mount or pay $175-200 for a new mount to fill with PU... decisions decisions. Theres about 113k miles on my trans mount right now, do these typically go bad (rubber mount crack, tearing?).

They do go bad. The first signs are difficult engagement of gears while cornering. Then, just before they fail you will find that even in a straight line they will be fine first thing (when cold) but when the transmission heats up the rubber gets very flexible and changing gear will become harder (stiffer).

This happened to me. I found it hard to change gear while accelerating through a RH turn 2-3. Also found it hard to do a quick change 1-2 from standstill turning right. It would change but only by crunching the gears or double clutching. After a few months I noticed that after a spirited freeway drive, changing gears seemed stiffer, even when not turning. A month later they failed completely and I fitted the semi-solid ones above.

This is how mine looked when removed from the car, 92k miles. The rubber had degraded quite a bit. There was a lot of transmission movement, now there is none with the solid unit installed.

I've heard of the polyurethane mod and I'm sure it works well but the key is to use the right material. I did some research on the subject some time ago and found that the glue used to install windshields is a great material to use because it is much harder then most poly-stuff-in-a-tube. hard enough to remain tight but soft enough not to crack under the extreme vibration. also for the highest durability you must make sure your mount is clear of corrosion and loose rubber. mine was in pretty bad shape so I just went with the full solid mount because I did not have time to dick around with the old one.

another idea is to use something like this

http://www.jegs.com/p/Prothane/762286/10002/-1

I purchased one and compared it to the LR solid mount and the jegs unit should fit if a right angle adapter bracket is fabricated. for 30 bucks and and hour or 2 of labor it seems like a good way to go. I mean as long as you are ok with the blasphemy of installing non Porsche parts on a 44

Not yet, hopefully on friday I did it long before I saw the mount thats posted below, otherwise I might have gone with that.

Ive never heard of windshield glue, but that makes sense too. This poly is some of the stiffer stuff on the market from what I read, and it is very nice and stiff.

I would think you could use a used mount for this, youd have to really clean it well though to get all the dirt off.

I just did some poking around on Honda and the Evo forums (blasphemy) and most of the guys used the windshield weld urethane or bought urethane from McMaster Carr..

Check out these part #'s on McMaster for possible types to use.

Where can I buy thick blocks of aluminium for a decent price to cut my own mounts out of? Like 4x4x4 in. I'd want to make my own motor mounts also.
