Default Turbonetics Super 50 Turbo

I have a New Turbonetics Super 50 Turbo that I pick up a few years ago. I think I was shooting for around 300-350 rwhp. Does anyone have any more info on this turbo? I was told it was comparable to a 27/8. It is a little different than the regular 50 trim, take a look at the compressor maps. Anyone have one of these?

Spec

Compressor Housing- Super T04E 50 Trim Big Shaft
Compressor Wheel- Super 50 Trim Inducer 2.122 major 3.20
Turbine Housing- kkk #8 turbine Stage 3 trim
Turbine Wheel- T3 Stage 3 exducer 2.227 major 2.555
Backplate- Dynamic Seal Super Big Shaft
Bearing Housing- Big Shaft Water Cooled

Thanks

Brian

I have used that exact turbo other than the turbine side. It called a super 50 even though it is really ~46 trim. The difference is the exducer size is 3.2 vs 3.0. I liked it however I think it is really suited for a high boost application (smaller engine) but it was very nice I felt. It will do what you need for 350 but there are better turbos for that area but it does work and spools very nice even though I was using a T4 hotside.

I have also tried a std 50 trim and the difference was not noticeable other than the super seemed to hold boost higher through the rpms.

For me ultimately it wasn't enough turbo.

What is odd to me is the backplate is gold mine is blue, and I thought turbonetics distinguished the exducer size with the different colors

That turbo is a good choice for the HP your looking for. Nize had a similar sized turbo, and put together a decent review:

What is that number on the gold part on the sticker? T-? Looks the same as the turbo I have in my car except yours is water cooled.

I would guess yes but it is impossible to tell from the angles in the photo. What size is the hole in the fitting??

It came installed from Turbonetics; I will have to measure it…

What Boost should I run with this turbo?

Ummm..well the turbo itself will not dictate how much boost to run, other mods will, but IIRC the sweet spot on mine ~ 18-20psi.

I ran it higher but seemed to fall off, of coarse I am probably not one to be speaking to people about what boost to run as I am always running at a high pressure ( this is due to E85)

Default Turbo Install

Finally started putting in the new Turbo. To clock both the hot side and the compressor I just took angle measurements off the k-26 using the bottom mount “oil outlet” as a reference, it fit right in. This is critical for me because im using the stock airbox. The studs and nuts, 10mm 1.5 pitch, came from ATP Turbo. I cut a brass plate on a milling machine to cover the O ring and used the gasket from turbonetics (It’s not paper). This allowed me to get the down pipe bolt in. I replaced the two bottom bolts on the back of the compressor housing with ones with smaller heads for clearance. The bottom of the compressor is about 1 mm above (not touching) the plastic alternator cooling duct, and
I didn’t even need to grind anything off the top of the turbo. After counter sinking the two screws holding the throttle return spring I have like 2 -3 mm of clearance. The water inlet pipe is a 3/8 NPT to ½ compression elbow and a 3/8 NPT to 3/8 NPT elbow from DG Hardware. I turned down the 1/2 side to 15.80 mm on a lathe, the size of the banjo bolt and threaded it with a 16mm Die, also, I cut down a 3/8 compression nut and ran a 16mm tap through it. If you put it together with the turbo in the car then you have to cut a small notch in the bolt that holds the alternator mount. The oil inlet on the turbo has a filter/restrictor that came installed from turbonetics. So I will be using that. For the oil inlet I ordered a 16mm to 4-an banjo fitting, 1/8 NPT to 4-an elbow and a 9 inch 4-an pre made Speed-flex (Teflon liner) hose from anplumbing.com.
