Here's the deal.
I have a mostly stock '87 turbo that I'm keeping.
I also have my '86 with some decent mods.
3" exhaust, no cat.
Escort Cups w/ hycoils and no t-bars
968 caster blocks
new coolant tank
New plug wires
strut brace
Forge BOV
and I'm sure that I've forgotten a thing or two.
Here's the deal. The '86 doesn't look good, and seeps oil from front and back seals, oil pan etc. as well as ps fluid. I don't feel like doing all of the work, so I bought the 87, which needs none of that stuff, but is stock, as I said.
The question is:
Should I pull all of the mods off of the 86 and install them on the 87, knowing that it will hurt the sale price of the 86, or should I leave the 86 mods in place and sell it for more?
I don't think that sale of the 86 will cover the actual money spent on the mods, plus the car, yet I feel like the car is worth a good 2k more with the mods in place. I'm trying to make a good decision on this. What do you guys think?

Break the '86 up and sell it. Sell the mods that are outdated, and with the proceeds of both, pour into newer, shinier mods. Simple.

The real question is whether it's worth more, to me, to transfer the mods, or to leave them in place

Personally i would swap all the easy stuff. The suspension i would leave in because even after the swap, that means your paying for 2x wheel alignments. Plus you need to factor in the mileage on the suspension (if its enough to matter).

It depends on what the market for 951s in your area is like these days. A lot of really good quality cars are not moving, even prices that are simply great, so can you really extract extra value for the mods? In which case, maybe you want to look at it from the following perspective. The cost to replace
3" exhaust, no cat. $ 900
Escort Cups w/ hycoils and no t-bars $2,000
968 caster blocks $200
new coolant tank $160
New plug wires $100
strut brace $250
Forge BOV $150
To replace what you have already will cost $3,700+ in parts alone. So unless you are intent on upgrading the 87 to a level better than the 86 or really want to keep it stock, my thought would be to salvage what you can and sell the 86 as a "stock" version or just lart it out.

Post it with the mods for a few weeks and see what type of response you get. If no one is in the range your asking, transfer the "good/valuable IYO" parts to the '87, and get what you can on the'86. Is the Saucer Fleet on the east coast?

Not to get on anyone's bad side here but I don't agree that a modified car is worth more than a stock one. There are some beautifully crafted cars here on Rennlist but I think they are the exception not the rule. For every 944 I see that is well sorted out there are at least 10 that are molested. We flatter ourselves a little to think we are in that small percentage of weekend wrenchers who can re-engineer a sports car. We fix em and make them faster or pretty and that stuff pegs the fun meter but value is really secondary. Of course someone told me this when I was younger and I thought it was total BS. Just thinking....Bruce

On cars that so often need a lot of stuff sorted out, the more that has been done, the cheaper the project becomes.
That said, I agree. It's hard to pinpoint a value basis.
