G86 and 016R pics/info
soo guys, I pulled the tranny of my boxster, and actually mounted a 951 to it for fun, it seeeems to fit! meaning 996 trannies fit with TT flipped 180 degrees.
only 3.. or was it 4? bolts align though, so a 1cm alu plate between them might be a good idea, so you can use all bolt holes, as I will put 500'ish hp to the wheels, and if my miata friend still passes me on straights it will see some boost and hit 700!
so... project pass miata begins! (he has aprox 450hp on 950KG)
G86 to left, 016R to right

yes, but, the bolt pattern of the G86 and G96 is the same, they are same tranny, but with flipped R&P
G86 = 986
G96 = 996
sooo you could bolton a G96, but that gives you 6 speeds in reverse, BUT ultima and all the other kitcars useing G96 solve it in a simple way, you flip it 180 degrees and run it upside down, and just move the air valve.
with our cars its quite easy, (theory) the front of TT is equal 4 bolt pattern, meaning you flip the TT as well. and you should be able to run a superstrong 996 GT2 transaxle, finally you can launch with 700HP and 345 rears!
I have a spare TT laying around in sweden somewhere, will try picking it up next time I'm there. nooow just need to buy a 996 tranny.
Im a bit unsure how strong G86 trannies are, I guess same as regular G96 996 trannies which isnt all that strong, max 500'ish reliable iirc, but the gt2 and late gt3 models are superstrong!

Anders, I haven't heard any evidence of the Boxter tranny being particularly strong, but I'm glad you've done this all the same. I am still very much in mind of doing the 2nd idea, but this maybe for trackcar only.
There is still the issue of CVs and driveshafts, but it's all do-able. So what motor is this mated to in your car? I thought you were going V8 or something.
You're friend's Miata sounds pretty damn quick!

yeah, I needed a clutch change on the boxster, so took some pics the thing like I said is the bolt flange beeing identical to 996, meaning it will work! not that I would use a G86, the 996 GT2 with steel syncros and custom gearing, and a sick'ol LSD is the way.
I still have the stock engine with a 26/8 in the car as I love to drive while I plan/buy stuff, but I have a bought a ls1, and is buying a ls3 as well, the ls1 is just to get everything approved, they won't approve a 500hp car, they *should* approve a 325 one though.
driveshafts etc need to be custom, as we are both going for 996 GT2 units, and probably identical mounts etc? we should just buy like 4 each, ending up with an order of 8, should bring price down as well. also need a new coupler for the splines for tranny probably, forgot to check though. most likely same spline count/size, but it needs to be 1cm longer or so if a plate is used to space tranny.
my "parts" bin is quite huge now, I have like 5 951 trannies etc and getting 16 new rims, 28 tires etc... should be a good 2009 season! but also hopefully a good 2008 season, Im doing track tomorrow, the 16th, the 20th etc, also doing spa-francochamps.
even with my 26/8 Im takeing the 996 GT3's on the straights, gotto love that! low weight.. mmm

There's many options for that. Drill and tap bottom of TT the same as the top is, weld on bungs for it to bolt to, weld or bolt on an adapter plate, etc.
For anyone that's already getting custom CV joints, mounts, and spacer/adapter plates...mounting the shifter would be a very minor thing to overcome.
*EDIT*
errr wait, or do you mean the shift rod? If using a G96 trans upside down, what side would the shift rod be on? If it ends on the bottom right, that could be a problem.

I talked to some rennlist vendors and have gotten pricequotes from 6-10k USD, depending on how hardcore and strong you want it, 10k gets you custom gearing, choose your own ratio lsd etc.
good thing for me being norwegian, the dollar is lowwww and that's not half bad for something that I can abuse a lot. but it is however still a small car and in the Us. a very decent 951.
G86/G96 are wire shifting, they make setups for the ultima and lots of other cars running it like this.
running it upside down puts the mechanism on the left side. can't see the trouble with it on the right though?
you don't really need to mount the shifter on the TT at all, just mount it on the chassis inside the car! it's wires! you can mount it on the roof if you like.
I just blew a loottttttt of cash on stuff, so will have to wait a few months to order. perhaps give it as a nice X-mas gift to meself?
also need to finish the cad-work on my brakes and some other stuff.

Make your own. I dont like how the stock shifter is setup anyway. I'm in the process of making an entirely new shifter with Heim joints on the shift rod ends and also attaching the shifter lever to the TT or floorpan using Heim joints on that as well so I will have close to zero slop or wear in the shifter and complete adjustability.

You had better check the fitment of the 996TT/GT2 tranny. As you know the engines are completely different from the 996/986/997/987, and they only use 4 mounting bolts to hold the tranny to the case halves. What I am saying, is you don't have the 8 or 9 holes to choose from that the 996/997/986/987's have on their trannys.
Edit: I can haul a spare torque tube up to the shop and try and mate it to a 996TT tranny if you would like.
Also the 996TT tranny is awesomley heavy.

a member on porsche hybrids forum suggested a smart thing, all thoose kitcars useing the trannies, uses plates, so just find one that supports 016/G96, and drill out the holes that align perfect.
as for weight, that's a not bad really, it's low down, and it's not like I have an engine behind it.. like a 911
is 4 bolts strong enough? interesting, boxster 2.5 has 5 bolts, and 2.7/s etc has 6 it seems.
also started wondering of the G96 is closer to 01E, meaning it would fit up to a 968 Torquetube

Here are a few pics that I've gathered along the way. As Doc says, the increase in weight is substantial, but if we are dealing with potential GT2 power / tq levels and more, then why not?
