Default Club Sports vs Cup replicas (mille) if anyone cares

Well, I took both cars out today to hopefully decide if Im going to run Club Sports or some aftermarket larger wheel for my project car still in pieces.

Now, I know the 17 Cup replica mounts a wider tire and imo better looks (one of my favorites) . However, I drove both cars today (both 89 with stock suspension) and I must admit that those little 16's will run circles around the Mille.

In the end, Ill probably run the stock Turbo S wheels on the project car since 16inch tires are pretty cheap compared to the larger.

Opinions? Anyone running a larger than 225 55 16f and 245 45 16r on these wheels? Will be running a 10 inch 2.5 id coil spring.

I was looking a kodiak wheels and wonder if they can make a 16x8f and 16x10r wheel that will work on the rear. I feel that would be a big advantage over any oem 18 wheel. I wonder what offset would be needed to work in conjunction with a 10" 2.5id spring and bilstein struts.

Interesting. I know that Mille wheels are heavier and also have a half inch wider front than OEM Cups. What tires did you have on the replicas? Replicas are also heavier than OEM Cups or your club sports.

At low speeds, yes. On the highway, however, the 17s get the nod. That's why Porsche included them in the 968 M030 package. The replica Cup 1s are heavier than the stock version, though.

It will be very hard to find wider tires for the 16" wheels. That side I have those on my Turbo S and have no desire to go bigger. I think the 16" CS wheels are perfect for the chassis and are also "period correct".

My only concern is street tires in 245/45 R16 are getting limited. They are still out there now, but I am not sure about 5 years from now. Since I plan to keep my Turbo for many many more years this long term avaibility is a concern. Still I'd rather not go to 17's.

Default wheels

The 17's have dunlop street tires(not sure exactly but pretty good ones) and the 16's have Bridgestone street tires( very used and beaten). The 16's just seem very nimble compared to the 17. Also, sometimes the 17's chirp while shifting into 2nd and never from the 16's. Tire pressures are set at limit listed on sidewall.

I guess what Im trying to say is that if youre not into modern trendy looks, the clubsports are hard to beat without spending big dollars. Personally, I dont mind the looks of the clubsport but the cups, twist, and carerra(5 spoke 18's) are among my favorites in the oem wheel designs.

Oh, the 17's on the 968? I like that wheel too and Ive heard that that particular wheel is the lightest 17 inch wheel avail from Porsche.

IMO, unsprung weight makes a huge difference in any car's responsiveness. In my neck of the woods, the general drift is that the best 17" wheel for the 951 is the Fikse FM10. Looks modern, in tune with current Rolex/American LeMans racer wheels, much lighter than replica Turbo Twists and replica Cup wheels, about the same IIRC as factory M030 17" Cups, but available in wider sizes and more contemporary look.

I love my Club Sports for the period correct feel, their indestructible design and ultra-light forged fabrication...but the selection of available street 16's is indeed shrinking fast, maybe only like five choices period for a 225/245 combo. Just bought a set of Sumiatro-something-or-others. Look OK, so-so dry grip and lousy wear but 1/3 the price of Michelin Sport Pilots.

In the race to extinction, I suspect the 245/45/16 will beat the internal combustion engine into oblivion giving Turbo S owners the difficult choice of stockpiling "The Last 16's" in secret sealed Tupperware tubs or going to 17's.
