You should look into one of the small aftermarket turbos like a Lindsey 48 or a SFR Stage 1. Running at stock boost they shuold give you better boost response, maybe a small hp increase without stressing your engine and you have a brand new, modern technology turbo.
Engine should be fine. The compressor side looks perfect, no damage that I can see, spins freely, no shaft play, etc. There is nothing in the hardpipes or intake manifold, I pulled the plugs and checked the oil...nothing unusual.

I am looking at alternatives, will make a couple calls today and get something ordered. I have only got 2 1/2 weeks until I am back down there so the clock is tickin'.

Hmm - this bolster my theory even more about staying away from re-built turbos on high perfomance engines....

I am leaning toward the SFR Stage 1. Any opinions good, bad, or indifferent? It seems to be a relatively straight forward bolt-on application with only having to cut down the jboot. Anyone have experiences with this turbo? I need to order something by tomorrow.

I have one. It is a fine turbo. Spool is fine. You have to bend the hard water line over the compressor to use the stock hoses but other then that it bolts up fine.

I took the turbo apart just for kicks. I think I will bolt the turbine housing to my trailer wall for decoration.

Oh, and the rebuilder saw the pics and says it looks like a typical shaft fatigue failure. FWIW

i'd be taking that back to whoever rebuilt it for a refund.

the rebuilder does warranty their work, right?

Regardless of the rebuild, the turbo was 20 years old with 96k miles on it. Not exactly the same as a brand new turbo so that point is, well, pointless.

edit: referring to the 20 hour comment, not Nize's.

I have a spare Huntley "stage 2" bb turbo from my old motor -- made 355 to the wheels with great torque curve -- if you're interested....

Thanks Tom, but I don't want to go hog wild on the power. I've got it set up for a specific NASA class and I'd like to keep it there. Thanks for the offer though!

I've got a call in to Tim at SFR.

Kool, did your Stage 1 SFR have the round oil return hole on the bottom? So you can use the stock o-ring, or did you have to get one of those adapters to seal the turbo to mount oil return?
