Default 5R Code - LSD???

Ok, so after an hour or so I'm sick of searching the archives & reading endless posts about the option codes.

I have heard/read a couple of posts that the code 5R denotes an LSD transmission with cooler loop. I know that 220 is the typical LSD code, so I'm just hoping that someone more knowledgable can verify the 5R claims, or not...

I only purchased my car last September & didn't have much opportunity to drive it or do smokey burn outs to know if it does have an LSD or not... The wonderful LONG winter we're having means that the 951 is still tucked up in bed enjoying a long lie in, so I havn't driven it since.

Please see the option codes for my car below - I have also not been able to find the D01 or E34 codes either.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks

I'm guessing those are dealer specific add on codes.

I believe the 5R you are looking for is stamped on the transmission itself, not on the sticker.

+1 above. The 5R is on the top of the trans case. Just as an FYI sometimes the option code sticker doesn't tell the whole story. I bought a parts last year with no 220 code thinking it was an open diff. When I got it home and jacked it up...yahoo...both wheels turn the same way and it did have an LSD trans. A guy who dismantles 944's told me he runs into that kind of stuff all the time.

5R is on the chassis sticker... he included freakin picture of it. It is NOT a dealer code. I have found that engine and trans codes are more reliable than option codes. My car does not have the 220 option but it has a 9U (IIRC) trans code... lsd no cooler. The trans code is correct, and I do have the lsd.
What he needs to know is if a 5R trans code does in fact mean lsd. I don't remember off hand, but I think if you do a search for transmission codes you may find something.

The easiest way to figure this out would be to jack up the car and see if the wheels can be turned in opposite directions.

searched and found:
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...smission+codes

looks like you should have LSD as long as the transmission is original to the car.

Thanks for the info - I read thru the thread link you provided & it does sound as though I have the LSD transmission, though I would have thought that the 220 code would have been present on the sticker.

I also agree that the option codes are not always accurate - my car has factory sport seats, which are not shown on the chassis sticker, but are definitely original.

Now I'll jack the rear of the car up & spin the wheels to verify my fortune!

I just jacked up the rear of the car - both wheels spin in the same direction.....

I am very happy. Now I can give the money I would have spent on a good LSD tranny to Uncle Sam.

Thanks again.

General Information from Clarks garage, go to the Garage Shop Manual then go down to transaxle information and click on link its very informative and yes I have seen dozens of 924/944/951's with no 220 but LSD transaxle's.

If you want to know more about your transaxle, the first thing you need to do is determine which transaxle you have. If you can not determine from the option code sticker on your car, or you believe the transaxle has been changed, then you'll have to get the code directly off of the transaxle.

This is extremely difficult to do on a 944 transaxle since the code is stamped on top flange near the front of the transaxle. To be able to read the code, you'll need an inspection mirror and a flashlight. You may also need a rag to wipe the area clear of debris to be able to read the code. The drawing below is an example showing the location of the codes and how to translate the code.

After you determine the code for your transaxle, you can use the table below to look up specific information about your transaxle. More transaxle information (924s and 968s) will be added as it becomes available.

Why didn't you just do this to begin with? Find the FSMs online in PDF format, they list all transmission codes and what they were.
