Default what are you guys paying for tire mounting?

I took set of rims by the local muffler shop yesterday to get 4 new tires mounted. They really surprised me asking $35 per tire (mount and balance onto a hand-carried rim). Tires were standard size for 87 turbo and rims were original.

I then put em back in the truck and drove across the street to walley world. No wait, $34 for all 4.

What do you guys pay? Bruce

National average I find is about $15-$18 each. East and West coast is much higher.

Things to consider:

Is the price including stems and disposal? Some like to sneak that in at the end....

Do they use touchless mounters and Road Force Balancers? If so they are worth the extra cost.

Do they use adhesive tape weights or clamp weights?

Anyone is welcome to use our recommended installer list to determine costs in your area. It's all listed here. Just input your zip code:

i have a buddy at a dealership do them for free on a touchless unit. I usually flip him a $20 though. Its about $10 atire if you dont need to remove the old ones here and most places wont put on new tires for you unless you buy them there.

I usually pay $15 (Depends who is working that day) or so each from the local mom and pop supplier that has been there since the 1950's, that is mounted and balanced (stick on weights..they also always tell me they can only put them on the inside, but the balance wont be as great). I had them dispose tires once, it was an extra $8 (this is a requirement in NYS to charge $8). I dont think ive ever actually bought a set of tires from them though.. usually i buy them online. I usually tip the guy doing it a couple bucks before hand to take extra care of my wheels. I never understood why people tip AFTER they do the work. If your gonna bribe someone, do it right! .

My father has a vintage Snap-On tire machine at his shop which i use to take the tires off myself usually. Its pretty easy. But putting tires on anything larger than a 16'' wheel is tough and takes ALOT of finesse.. i never quiet learned the trick to doing it.

My best local price is $1/inch(rim size), so $17 each on a 17-inch wheel. Everywhere else in town is $25/wheel or more. I live in a small town, so I figured most places charge an arm and leg to keep people from ordering from Tire Rack, but maybe not ...

that is the wierdest pricing schedule I have seen, I wonder which tire monkey dreamt that up! Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but wheel size doesn't affect how hard it would be to mount & balance.

FYI: My shop mounts and balances for free if I get an alignment done.

I'll give you a kicker for mounting and balancing prices. I called one of the local BMW dealers to find out how much they charge per wheel to mount and balance a tire.
Are you guys ready......................
$110!
I asked twice if that was the cost per wheel or for all four and the service advisor almost laughed when i had to ask her over and over again since I couldn't believe it. So the tire was $116 and the installation was $110.
Nice!

Were they quoting for run-flat tires? Some BMWs have them and I think they are tougher to deal with.
