951 Piston Rings ??
Hi,
I am visiting from the 928 World so please be nice 8>)
The 951 Piston Ring Set is 951 103 901 02 is still available from Porsche at about $132 a piston set.
Goetze is the OEM I beleive and they are superceding that number to the more standard 944 103 902 82 (08-323300-00).
Do any of you know if they are the same parts or not.
Talked with Vertex and Pelican and know one seems to know for sure.
If there is a difference what should I be looking for?
If the 951 and 944 parts are the same there is a tremendous price delta.
Thanks in advance for any help .
Roger

These guys, honestly, probably don't do stock rebuilds much. The oil ring on the 944NA pack is a three piece, with thin outer rings and a "coregated" inner, as I pictured in my engine thread. The oil ring in the 951 pack is TWO piece, and has a spiral center section with a hard wire through it. The ring part is ONE ring, with an inner core notched out to cary this coiled inner piece.
Secondly, the 944NA ring pack has a second compression ring with a sizable notch taken out of the back, thereby reducing total ring width at the piston bore edge. The 951 second compression ring is rectangular and full size.
Lastly, the top ring on the 944N ring pack is though of as "cast" - it is a black metal that is rectangular like the second ring in the 951 pack. The 951 top ring has a chome-like face, and also feels like a different material. More rugged and quality feeling.
I'm sorry I don't have all the part numbers, but I know for a fact that paragon-products as I mentioned differentiates them, or at least they did.

Hi Brendan,
Talked with Paragon today and they offer the 944 part as it is superceded from the 951.
It would appear that the only way to get the 951 set is from Porsche.
I have also been talking direct with Goetze and hope to understand why they are superceding the number to the 944.
Maybe a dream but they could have conbined the design into one set???
Started a thread on the 928 board.
See you over there.
Thanks for your advice.

Contact Jeremy Himsel. He can tell you all about rings and rebuilds. He's got two or three going on right now.
