Default exhaust crush ring removal

I'm having trouble removing the crush rings between the exhaust headers and the downpipe on my 89 951. They are recessed into groves on the downpipe. Is there any special procedure to get them out?

Thin screw driver + hammer. If not then a "careful" go with a dremel.

Corner of a cold chisel, get enough in there to collapse the seal and rotate it some, done deal.

First stick a rag or something in the crossover if you haven't already. You're going to be pissed if you drop something down there.

Spray with PB Blaster to help loosen it up then do what they ^ said.

You can also heat it with a torch.

i used a razor blade- thick one- and picked away at it. It kept breaking but eventually it popped up and i grabbed it w/ a big magnet.

Default .

thanks for the help everyone, I was able to use my dremel to grind out a groove and then tap a tiny screwdriver in there and pry to old ones out.

What a pain in the *** though. Every time I work on this car it seems I find some new engineering decision that the masochistic engineers at Porsche made solely for the purpose of causing mechanics grief. Why didn't they just use a god-damned gasket like everyone else?

I now have a problem with head gasket torque that I'll make a new tread about..
