Default Fuel in catch can

I have been smelling a strong fuel smell the past couple days, seemingly coming from the passenger side, It is noticeable walking around the car. Under the hood it seems to be coming from around the rear injectors and catch can(with breather filter). I decided to look under car to check my fuel lines, as I had ran over large 18 wheeler tread last weekend. I opened the drain for the catch can while under which for a year has always been bone dry, Today about half a capful( 24 oz bottled water) of fuel. There was no oil only fuel. What Gives???

Thanks
Steve

The fuel lines run under the passenger side of the car. You might want to put it on a lift and check for damage from the tire hit. I have come very close to hitting the carcass of a truck tire, very big object to a low car.
