Default how screwed am i ? WP stud fubar...

so i decided just before dropping my motor back in to replace the studs that hold the water pump on. I grabbed the first one w/ a vice grip, worked it back and forth alittle and it seemed to be turning and then snappo- broke right off. So i grabed the next one over- two very top studs- and did the same thing- excellent. At this point im seeing a pattern so i stopped. I borrowed my bud's extractor set and drilled a hole through both bolts. Installed the extractor and just as i though the first one was coming out- snappo! once again. So the next one over i drilled out w/a larger size, tried that one and snappo!!!! Ok so now i have two holes, drilled out, with extractors broken off in the holes. I have a tap set so i can retap them or whatever but how the hell do i get the extractors out??

Is there anything left to grab? maybe with vise grips or a needle nose? Heat them with a torch and they will come out with a little wiggling.

nothing- totally flush. They drilled pretty easily and when i tried to extract them it seemed as if they were coming right out and then the bit just snapped. I tried the larger size on the next one thinking it was just too thin of an extractor bit but that one did the same damn thing. The extractor is almost impossible to drill. Im wondering if the top two bolts are absolutely necessary if all the others are in place... the top of the pump is pretty darn thick!

Yes, you need those top two bolts.. Thats wishful thinking my friend, lol..

With the head off, look inside and see if you drilled through. Maybe you can get at one of them???

hmm. maybe. Do the holes usually go all the way through to somewhere? I know the one to the right felt like it went into the coolant passage which would explain why they rust so badly.

It will take some time, make sure you don't get to carried away and make a hole that you can't re thread.

ps - I always use a little heat and work them a bit and they come right out. I guess at this point, you can spray whatever you got on there to maybe loosen them up, I doubt it though, sorry..

Dan, I feel for you. Last time I broke off an extractor bit, the only way I could get it out was with a plasma cutter. Good Luck.

EXTRACTORS SUCK!

I just drill the bolt with the correct size drill that will remove most of the bolt at which point the remaining bolt material (which should just be threads) can be picked out or I just re-tap the hole.
