Default Need cure for exhaust smell at speed

I have Searched forum as have many others, What am I missing?

Have tightend hatch, but cant believe that that much smell can get back into hatch at speed, air flow should push it behind car coming out of exhaust tip.

I have to believe it is coming from the engine bay. Admitaly I have an open element catch can, And I know there are cans and a moroso adapter to reroute the fumes back to intake. But I have been happy w/ this setup, except fumes if coming from the catch can filter.

I have tried sealing up screens to blower if fumes were getting in there, and no change.

I have changed the firewall gasket to another used, but better condition then mine. Paragon could not get new one.

I have snugged up the rubber seal under shifter boot.

I have not sealed up to check, but i do have the drainplugs for wheel well open because i was having problem w/ water getting collected there.

Any other options??
Thanks
Steve

Is your hatch frame separating from the glass at the top? That will allow fumes to come in as well.

Actually yes, I think it is, but would overwelling fumes come in at speeds of 70+ ?

I have read that definative fix is repalcement. True??

Thanks

I have also heard that the hatch is the most likely suspect from others experiencing the same probs.

You can separate and reseal the hatch, but it is not an easy job.....and it helps to have a spare hatch laying around just in case the glass pops while separating it.

make sure the downpipe bolts that connect to your exhaust are tight.

When tracking down my exhaust smell I thought my hatch gasket/seal was OK, but after putting some stickon insulation (like around a window AC unit) my smell went completely away.

A friend suggested the stickon insulation as a cheap "temp" fix to see if the hatch gasket/seal was the culprit without buying a new.

I never got around to installing a new hatch gasket/seal and 2+ years later there is no exhaust smell.

Just throwing this out there as a cheap test for the hatch gasket/seal.

I had the same problem and probably spent $1500 solving the problem:

- replaced shift boot and seals
- re-glued hatch
- replaced all hatch hardware
- replaced all hatch seals
- replaced firewall seals

I have always kept my recirc button pressed, for kicks today I turned the recirc off and noticed a huge decrease in exhaust smell.

Any thoughts other then the obvious that I was not getting any fresh air. I assumed the smell was getting drawn from catch can to blower motor, so I have kept the recirc button engaged.

Thanks

Had already taken care of this, which I noticed fuel smell at fill up, but the smell I was getting was definately exhaust. I was just supprised to have it almost dissapear by powering off the recirc button.

Replace both window seals, the hatch seal and check on the firwall cowling seal...whatever it's called, under the hood. If it's bad it will pull fumes into the vents. If your cat is clogged it will make this issue MUCH worse.
Go look at your rear bumper. There is a reason it is alwys the dirtiest. The air flows like a big swirl back there and will come in through the hatch seal.
