My buddy recently installed a late 180mph speedo in his 86 951 and it trips the oil light and the ! light. Id like to avoid this - what do I need to do to have it function properly?
Thanks,
Sam

The problem here is that he does not have the oil LEVEL SENDER - as 86's did not come with them.
So he will need an 87plus harness, 87plus oil pan and the sender.
Not really practical.
Or he can investigate how to send false ground, but I don't know if even almighty "TT" knows how to do that one......

the oil light and the ! light can just be looped. there problem sloved. OR you can just take out he light builb. Or you can blow the light bulb hehe sounds funny if you must have a light bulb in there. I know some few **** people on here lol

Thanks for the replies...
I only have my 86 manual here - on the late cars did the oil pressure sender and the oil level sender trigger the same oil warning light or is there an additional light?
Im pretty **** and would like to maintain the stock 86 951 working system (ie not removing bulbs for warning lights) Id rather send a false signal for the oil level....the other option is of course just to install the 180mph speedo into the 86 cluster but I have a mint late cluster w/ rings ready to transplant.

If you can figure out what pin is the oil level sender, you can likely either connect it to ground or 12v (have to see a wiring digram to know which.. or you could test both scenerios) and have the light go out. You may even be able to figure this out by following the traces on the PCB of the cluster.

I wouldn't think you'd want to sabotage your oil warning lights either?

Just gotta weigh the options I guess...

all in very LAME terms since i cant really type. as you prob know already.
1. i have no idea how does the 944 cluster work so this is just a general very simple example.
Lets say the cluster for xyz car has power always going to it.
Now you want to loop/trip/tick the cluster in thinking that the oil level is full at all times. And the only way it trips/lowers/cuts/alter the signal is by lowering the volts below 12v when the oil is low. so when the cluster read less then 12v the little bulb lights up(once again i have no idea how does the oil lever sender works with the cluster i do not have a wire diagram with me) srry.
So what you do is basically loop the wires by tyeing them together or bridge them together dont matter how or put a resistor in between depending on how the system works. So now their is a constant flow of 12v. So the light remains off in thinking the oil level is full because its a closed circuit. Hope this help and i didnt explain it wrong for you.

I have a set of '88 wiring diagrams. After looking into it I would say to ground pin 15 on plug A of the cluster. There appears to be more to than just a light turned on by the level switch. There are some electronic functions not described. According to the symbol the level switch is normally closed and I would assume this is the state it is in with oil level detected. This explains why you are having the problem, if "normal" did not need the ground the circuit would think everything is normal with no switch connected.
At any rate I can clearly trace the wire from the level switch to pin 15 on plug A of the cluster and the other side of the switch is grounded. I feel quite confident you won't hurt anything by grounding that point.
I have an extra cluster from an '86 so I could look into what it would take to ground that point if you still need help.

cant you just take the 86 housing and swap the gauges into that? Then your housing wouldnt have the wiring for it and it wouldnt call for it to light up right? unless all housings are the same.
