How many optima batteries have you had die outright on you?
My third Optima just died, won't hold a charge for more than a day. Interstate guy is going to replace it because it has a 5 year warranty but I'm just going to give the replacement to a friend. I'm tired of screwing around with these things. Anyone have a good suggestion for a new batt? Anybody else have terrible luck with these things or is it just me?

I have had a few yellow tops with no problems. I also had a red top in a car for a couple of years with no problems.
I think the 944 is hard on batteries, I have replaced two duralast batteries in my car.

If you had a red top and you have a system in your car, you should go with the yellow top. I had them on a few muscle cars and they held-up much better than any other battery. They hold the charge longer and they are made to drain and recharge with no problems.

If I remember correctly, Optima batteries were amazing several years ago. A lot of my friends use them in the 4x4s to work the winchs and everything. But from I've heard, Optima was bought by another company a year or so ago and the quality of the batteries they make have dropped drastically.

Yeah, I've had some go bad...red-top & yellow top.
Always have on the charger...just seems to happen.
Last time I took in for warranty (nice!) they hooked it up to their machine to check-it out and it started foaming from the breather, heh.
Still, can't beat 'em.

If you're looking for performance, as in light weight, try Odyssey batteries. They are military spec, deep cycle, dry cell batteries. You will need to fashion a hold-down, or buy one of theirs. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/applications/auto.htm

I had a red top die prematurely on me - Optima replaced it for free (saying, "Wow, those never die...")
I have other red tops in other cars that have performed fine for years.

I'm thinking of going to Odyssey or Braillie. I might give the optima one more try before I hang it up for good, but this car gives me enough to worry about without a dang dead battery.

I have an Optima red top in my Vet and in my 71 Bronco and have had 0 problems going on two years. Maybe I got them before the new company took over and the quality dropped?
