Default balance shaft torque confirm

I would like to confirm the torque specs for the balance shafts housings on an 87+ block but having touble finding sources. I think they are 6mm and 8mm bolts. Either way there are two different size bolts and IIRC the larger bolt torque specs are 11 lbs then 22 lbs and the smaller are 11 lbs then 15 lbs. can someone confirm this for me or point me to an online source. Thanks.

The M8 bolts near the rear bearings call for a higher torque. I'll look them up for you if no one else does so in the meantime.

The smaller bolts are about 8 ft lbs - any more and they will strip!!! They are very touchy - do not over torque.

Chris, while you're here what about the larger bolts near the rear bearings?

There is an ordering and 2-stage sequence for the covers.

1. Hand tighten all bolts
2. tighten the two hardened M8 bolts near the rear braring to 11 ft lbs (i.e. 1/17 and 2/18 below)
3. tighten the remaining bolts in the specified pattern, with M6 bolts at 7 ft. lbs. and remaining M8 bolts at 15 ft lbs.
4. then tighten the two hardened M8 bolts to a 24 ft lbs.

Pattern is:

15 3 1/17 5 7 9 11 13
rear _______________________________ Front
16 6 2/18 4 8 10 12 14

this is for 87 and later blocks.

Some more information:

From my own experience, pay close attention to step 2. Not doing this caused binding of the shaft in my case. Be sure to check that the shaft rotates freely as you progress through the steps.

More information for the upper shaft cover can be found here on Clark's Garage.
