The most stupid thing you've done while working on your car?
I took my 84 944 to the car wash, the car needed a lot of work but it needed a car wash first, left my dog in the car when I unhooked the high pressure sprayer and started to wash the car, my dog began barking at the water hitting the windows and I thought it was funny..kinda goes nuts on the vacuum cleaner too, when the wash was done I got in the car to move it to the drying area...and noticed a six by four chunk of foam and plastic missing from the passenger side dash. Live and learn...

Installed oil pan gasket incorrectly...twice in a row. I couldn't tell whether oil kept leaking from the pan gasket or rear main seal. I got so frustrated I pulled the whole motor out for a rebuild...even though it didn't need it. Countless dollars and several months later...it's still on blocks in my garage.

Pushed up on hood while changing hood shocks, crunched the windshield with the rear corner of the hood...the same windshield that I had just installed three weeks prior. Kids learned some new words that day.

I also dropped a 1/4" drive 10mm socket into the bell housing inspection hole while putting the flywheel sensors back in AFTER finishing up a clutch job. Boy, I wan't happy about that!

ok- this was recently...believe me it still hurts me
did a clutch change for someone i know at a good price. Pulled the car apart, ordered clutch and assy's . Got it back together as far as the bellhousing- noticed the ringgear on the floor. SHI#!!! Pulled it back apart, put in ring gear- finish up job.
drive it around the block- circlip on TO bearing is not seated all the way apparently and falls out. Remove everything again and basically do the entire job back over again that night. Car drives fine.
Week later i get a call. Car is leaking on the ground oil. From the rear main seal. Yesterday- pulled car apart again - installed another new rear main- porsche gasket this time- so far so good.

Rushed to get my car back together so I could drive out to school, put the front wheel on, tightened and didn't torque. About 1 mile down the road my front wheel falls off grrr... This was in the festiva though.
For the Porsche though, I would say putting the head studs in upside down would take the cake.

When I did the belts the first time I put the roller on the T-belt tensioner the wrong way around. I checked in there about 100 miles later to find the T-belt rubbing against the block - oops ...
