Default 86 951 vs. 928s?

This is not a racing thread but after something happened to me last Saturday I'm a little curious. Driving down the 405 I spotted a white 928s, after pulling up next to him I looked over and nodded expecting a a driver of a similar vintage and make to nod back. I was very surprized as the the 928 driver pulled away expecting me to race I guess. What a joke I thought to myself as I watched this big car swerve in and out of busy traffic I was completely in laughter and a little disapointed that he didn't acknowledge me. But the question I have is which car performs over the other? BTW if the dude in the 928 comes across this thread, next time realize a 951 and a 928 seldom get the chance to drive next to each other in SoCal so don't be a jerk.

I've had a similar experience, but with a 944 n/a, which looked like it's day had come and gone. I pulled up and gave the nod, and the guy didn't even give me a look. Unfortunate.

Yeah, that's a good question...
I know both my '89's (951 & 928) are about the same.

I don't know about that, Luis - there are some very fast 928 out there.
Just look at this car that almost beat me from a roll on Saturday night.

This just happens to be Mark Kibort's daily driver.
Notice the lights underneath so he can take track temperature readings more easily.

I owned a 928, and at the time was a police officer with a ford mustang LX assigned to me, the short story is they were about the same, I was driving my 928 when I found out, I expected to leave to stang but we let off at 90. so you never know, it is a shame though, I had the same thing happen not too long ago, a guy pulled up next to me in a 928, he looked over and said nice car BUT I traded up, or something like that, and I told him I owned one like his and it was too slow......I know I should of taken the higher road......but its hard sometimes.

My challenge is still hanging.

Drag slicks, you pick the track - Tim Murphy will bring his wife's car (just to keep it fair, his 928 would spank your 951 even if he starts in 2nd).

This will not be a speed test. But a test to see how many launches you can each do before parts hit the crowd.

I give you three. Tim's car already has a few dozen with 295/35-18 BF Goodrich Drag Radials.

Don't give me that highway roll on crap since with the 220 rear end her car will easily do 200mph.
If you really want to be embarrassed, there is another 928 in this area that is faster in every way than Tim's two cars, it even has a custom 7 speed transmission. He’s running Mickey Thompson DOT drag slicks, stock rear end with stock axels / CV joints.

This is just from the Wisconsin crowd.

Oh yea, his stage 3 kit just hit the market. So there are more than a few 500-550 rear wheel hp 928’s running around. With a drive train that can actually take the power.

Take it easy, be safe out there guys.

I have owned 2 951's before so I will give you my 2 cents worth based on STOCK cars. The 951/928S4 have similar performance off the line but once you hit 70-80 the 928 is faster. The 951 handles better in the corners but the 928 is more solid/stable at speed.

The 951 is cheaper to own/run and with $5k worth of upgrades can out perform a 928.

I have an 80 928 and a lightly modified 86 951. The 951 is much faster. However, the 928 has instant throttle response at all times, and upgraded suspension and brakes. This makes it a pretty fun real world driver that I use a lot. I have to be cooking all the time in the 951 to do what the 928 does casually, or at will. Both are really great cars, and the 951 is quite a bit faster, until you get to 100, after which it is much faster.

I also used to have an 89 S4. Very different feeling than the 951, not a slow car by any means. These later cars are heavier, and need much more tire to feel modern, just as a 951 doesn't really do well with the stock 205s up front. Fast car, but no drama. A tap on the throttle would get you an instant 10 mph at 80 or 90. Incredible feeling of stability. However, I sold that car, and bought my 951. And an 81 ROW 911 SC. Fast car, set up for track/autocross.

All great cars. GREAT CARS !!! Here's that wave from a 928 owner and PORSCHE enthusiast !

Lart you must be smoking the same **** ibkevin smokes.

He tryed to pass me on 395 on our way up to sharks at the lake. I was doing about 75 when I saw him about 100 yards back coming up fast. I droped down to third and nailed it. He passed by and got about 100 yards ahead. When I passed him I was doing about 140 and he was fading fast. As I approached 170, I could hardly see him in my mirrors anymore. Real men don't drive four bangers.

Here's a picture from my cell phone just as the 928 dude pulled away from me. Again, I just don't understand why this guy did this. What's up? Can't we all just get along?

Why is it always the 928 guys that get upset at these kinds of threads?

Hacker.....are you calling out Lart with someon elses car or are you challenging him to a race against your own car?

I just loaded up a fresh one Stevo, and if my rig wasn't putting down a slick for Bill, you'd have a little less *** to rest on!

I have to admit it, when you pull 167 through GPS, I'll buy the beer's.

Kinda funny how it takes twice the displacement to make those 40mph top speed claims over the 951...
