928s are great if you're over 40 (or just act like it). I'd buy one then.

Ouch, that one hurt Daniel. (38 and counting). Remind me to poke you with a pointy stick next time I see you. :-)

When are you going to be in the market for a 951 again? I found an interesting one over in Carmel for $5k obo. Higher miles, needs some TLC, but has recent TB job and decent interior. Interested? I thought about getting it for my son, who will be 16 soon, but I'm not sure that's a good 1st car.

As far as the debate/pissing contest. I love my 928, love the looks, love the sound, love the instant power. But, I miss the nimble feeling of my 944 and it was just an NA. The cars are 2 totally different kinds of cars, like comparing a cheetah and a racehorse, both are fast, one feels like it has better handles, one feels like you can flog it for a long time with no adverse affects. If you want to go quick for a short period of time and then get off before something bad happens, ride the cheetah. If you want to go fast for a long time, comfortably, and then put it away sweaty, knowing it's going to be ready to go again as soon as you want, ride the horse.

I was just poking fun....Sitting on 37 myself so a little self-effacing humor...

I'd love to but not now. I'm going to wait a little while before getting another P-car which will probably be a 968 or 928 then. Been there done that with the modified 951. Not only do I have the T-shirts but still have the random spare nuts and bolts....)

I'll argue that as the corvette girls are twice as emotional about it. It's pretty funny when you get them all fired up or tell them that my wife smoked me in my ZO6 while she was driving my 951.

Growing up one of by best friends owned a germam import repair shop and the first 928 I drove was a 93 GTS and it it still one of the best cruisers I've ever driven.

I guess many on this list havent actually raced a 928 , or prepared a 928 for racing.

In the turns, braking and overall reliability is hard to match with the 928.
I have a set of headers on a stock 1986 928.
1:39.0 at laguna seca
2:01.6 at thunderhill (long track)
1:47.9 at Sears Point.

why dont you try and find a 944 that has posted a faster time, and IF you can find one, tell me what was done to it.

I remember beating Ted Philips in his white 951 with my stock 1984 4.7 liter . we had some good races, but the 928 had some advantages in the handling department. remember, it is wider than a 944 and that allows for some advantages in many handling areas.

The biggest problem with a 928 as it came off the showroom floor, is that it was fitted with silly small tires and the suspension was very soft. Once that is cured with larger rims and tires, and the stock coil overs are replaced with springs and sport bilstiens or Konis, it is a TOTALLY different car. In stock form, even with those mods, the 944 has an advantage (if the HP to weight ratio is equal) because of its lighter weight. However, once you take out many of the super luxury items in the 928, the cars are pretty comparable. (both are fast) Now, once you want to fully gut both to make race cars out of them, the 928 has many advantages. The platform lends itself much better for racing, proven what i have done with it.
(and by the way, i can drive to the track, with an entire set of 4 wheels and tires along with my support equipment , and run 6 full racing seasons with no DNFs!)

relax guys, they are both great cars. If money was no option, i would buy a GT3 and be done!

Just look at this car that almost beat me from a roll on Saturday night.

This just happens to be Mark Kibort's daily driver.
Notice the lights underneath so he can take track temperature readings more easily.

Comparing your 928 to a mildly modified street 928 is like comparing the Doom 951s to a Vitesse kitted 951.

Mos people here are speaking from the perspective of street driven cars with (mostly) full interiors while you mention "Once you strip the interior...". It's an Apple-Oranges comparison.

More seriously, the cars are too different to be compared directly and were never meant to be direct competitors.

Hey I don't EVER REMEMBER SEEING A 951 participate in a Speed GT Challenge event, let alone seeing one in anything regulated by FIA.

Stock vs. stock, the 928 S4 would walk the 944 Turbo. The 1985-1986 early 32-valve cars would have a little struggle off the line with the 951, but would pull away in the area where they shine best, top end, top speed.

Modding? Well, the 928 has lived many years without the need for modifications. It seems only recently have supercharging and turbocharging our V8's entered hype. And BTW, a Supercharged 928 would destroy a modded 951 when tuned right. How about this, let's take the highest modded 951, and pit it against a car with a similar setup like Louie Ott's car with individual throttle bodies, GTS crank and 968 pistons (6.4L displacement). I can tell you even this all motor 928 would make any 951 owner **** himself in disappointed over the thousands of dollars he spent on a 4-banger turbo.

Funny, this Rennlist forum is looking more like a Honda Civic forum of ricers than Porsche owners. There are more bench racers here than anywhere else in various automotive forums. Hell I'm pretty sure some of you 951 guys would stew in your shoes to be beat by a naturally aspirated 8-valve 944 at an autocross due to your LACK OF EXPERIENCE.

Put a dollar cap on the comparison.
Given a cap of $15k for the car and all the mads you fit with the difference, how would they compare with regards to perfomrance and reliability?

That could be a tough call. I have seen both cars reliable.

However, I have seen more blown up 951s than 928s.

You have probably seen more modified 951s than 928s.

Outside of wheels and suspension, how common are modified 928s compared to 951s? Sure a few guys are putting on SCs but, as a percentage, there are far more modified 951s.
