Default Trans Oil Capacity

I am going to be putting in Redline MT90.

What is the filling capacity including the trans oil cooler? The book specified 2L, clarks garage says 2.6L.

Any suggestions or tips for the oil change?

Thanks.

Fill until you have it about 6 mm below the bottom of the fill hole. It takes around 2.5 quart bottles of fluid.

If I have oil cooler should I drive after I fill fresh oil so the pump sucks up the oil and then add some more afterwards?

Factory manual is pretty clear on the level, but I'd assume no practical risk by over filling to the fill hole. I've been sticking the short end of a small allen key in the fill hole to check level below the bottom edge of the hole for decades.

ahhh @#$!, fell for a 16 year old thread...

Good question, try it and let us know... Probably can just spin the wheels by hand for a bit and that'd be enough to circulate fluid thru the cooling loop, without even setting the car down. I'd guess that unless you let the trans drain for hours, much of the fluid in the cooling pipe doesn't drain back thru the gear pump so won't really empty out.

Just to adding reference info for future searching...

Porsche TSB 8506 for 944 and 944T
Dated 9/19/1986

"With the introduction of the 85/2 Model 944, the oil level in the manual transmission was lowered.
This reduces the operating temperature of the transmission because of less oil splash.

"The factory fill is now only 4 U.S. pints of gear lube instead of 5.2 U. S. pints.

"When checking the transmission oil level, make sure the oil level is approximately 6mm below the filler bore, since the oil filler plug position has not been changed."

Sounds like I may need to drain a little out of mine then.

Was the cooler loop even fitted in 1986?

Default Trans Cooler

According to Clark’s for 1986:

- 5P trans in 944T had a standard oil cooler

- 5R trans in 944T had an optional cooler + LSD combo

My recollection is that the cooler was standard on the 86 Turbo, with or w/o LSD. For 87+, the cooler was an option based on which transmission was in the car.

So TSB 8506 takes no account of whether the cooler loop is or isn't fitted?
