80's boxter
Something I find interesting...
I've heard from a few people that 944's were quite popular back in the 80's. You'd see them all the time... but times have changed...
It's now all about the Boxters. I see them EVERYWHERE. Maybe i'm not a true Porsche enthusiast, I don't like boxters. But I do like the fact that my turbo 944 could basically blow the doors off a boxter.
So what's after the boxter? Cayman? It's damn near a boxter and looks way better... but still, what's next in line??

Well I don't care too much for boxsters (boxer engine + roadster) either, well except for the S models and 987s, I'd get one of those. Its hard to compare the boxster to the 944 series because of their mid engine layout, 6 cylinder engine, and 2 seater set up. I think there reason there are so many of these models is because of the "poor man's Porsche" image that both these series have created. When the boxster was released in 97 it had a base price of <40k.
There were about 150,000 924/944/S/T/S2/968 imported to the US, however I do not know the production figures of boxsters.

There isn't anything wrong with a boxster, they handle great, but could use some more power. Our supercharger kits for the boxster helps though
They are definitely the next 944 in terms of afford ability. You can pick up a boxster in the mid teens already. I have a feeling the cayman will be next if they continue the production for a few years.

You have to remember that part of the reason that the 944 t are desireable is for the power. Unless the boxsters or Cayman can reach the turbo's performance I would still settle for the 944 turbo. Before I purchased my car I looked at and test drove a 2000 Boxster and it doesn't compare power wise to our cars, yes it looked good and it was newer but I wanted a car that had performance to backup it's good looks.

Boxter (S included) does nothing for me. Underperformer in my book. Why have "sports car" that won't perform when ir gets down to it...... might as well be a miata

Well in either case, they beat RX-8s... at least i hope so ;-) I drove a friends brand new rx-8 and it felt worthless. I didn't want to tell her that because its her "dream car" and she'd cry if i put it down.
Porsche went from the 968 to a mid engine water cooled design... makes more sense than having the engine hang off the rear axle. But there is a bit of weight at the rear axle still, but yet the cars still handle great.
What I find nuts is when a good ole Honda s2000 with its rice burner exhaust drives next to me and then they get on it. I floor it, watch the boost gauge go up and watch them fall behind. Worthless. 350z's are faster than them but are still a bit... meh.
So in comparison, a BRAND NEW Boxter S versus an S2000 or 350z... you get what? S2000 and boxter are damn near the same, 350z is a tad faster. 944 turbo... well, we like to modify our cars... so go figure.
Cayman S... damn near the same as a boxter S, just a few pounds less and a tenth of a second faster from 0-60.
I think they need a forced induction entry level car, that would really stir things up in the mix.

I think we are comparing apples to oranges when we talk n/a vrs a turbo car. But boxter vrs. 944 or Cayman S, is a somewhat fair contest.
I have a 07' Caymen S and it is an awsome car. I like it better than the n/a 997. With the Caymens modern electronics, ie sport suspension, traction control , PSM, it can make a bad driver look awsome. I also think it can give a stock 944t a hard time on the track.
That being said, like Porsche Doc said, I would love 100 more horses under the hood.
