Default 86 951 with very sloppy gear shift

I have an 86 951 with 42k and the shifter has a lot of movement both side to side and forward and aft. The vibration in the stalk makes a loud noise in all gears but is more prominant in 2nd and 4th gears. This car has no mods other than momo shift boot and ****. I had the same effect with the OEM boot and **** too. I did replace the actual shift stalk mechanism last week and it did very little to settle the heavy vibration. The car runs very smooth both on start-up and after the car is warm. Any ideas as to what could be causing the vibration and noise passing through the shifter stalk? Any help as always is greatly appreciated.

Thx all

I would have said to replace the stalk mechanism. I hope your talking about the entire shifter, because to my understanding its the white plastic base at the bottom of the assembly that goes bad. It's known to crack. The only other thing I can think of is that you should check the linkage. I believe you can adjust this at the top of the transmission. It might be loose. I havent done that on a 951 yet though, only a 84' 944. So I dont know if anything has changed, but thats all I can think of. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Thanks nitehawk951, i did replace the entire shifter including the plastic base at the bottom. I will keep you posted if we find the root cause.

Check where the linkage attaches to the trans. There's a bolt that works like a set screw. If it's loose, it can induce a lot of sloppiness & rattling. Eventually it will damage the shaft on the trans & come apart entirely.

Check the shift rod (the black steel rod) for wear in the bore that the shifter pin slides into. These can get ovalled and cause the new shifter to wear out quickly and be sloppy.

Not sure if this applies...

my old 85 944 had a very sloppy shifter that would move all over the place but still function. It was loose... it'd sway back and fourth with the road.

There's a shaft that comes off the shifter, where the transaxle shift linkage attatches. They can wear, you may have to add something in there to shim it so that it will once again, be tight.

You will have to pull up your shift boot to view it of course.

The shift linkage on the transmission is easy to reach with the driver's side rear wheel removed. Look on the top of the transmission, near the rear, on the driver's side. 90% sure you that's where you will find the cause of your problem.
