88 Turbo S tranny and 89 Turbo?
I have a guy on ebay who claims to be a Porsche engineer, he is stating that the Silverose Turbo S tranny and the 89 Turbo tranny are not the same here is his statement.
I'm a engineer who worked in the A2 line for Porsche assigned to North America in 94. Most people think the 88S and 89-91 cars are the same but they are not! Although the share many of the same pieces and parts, the 88 had many race quality parts, where the 89-91 had the same parts in mass production and always a bit less in quality. Its the part "number" on your gearbox that indicates the difference. yes it is a LSD, and yes it does have the M414 oil pump, and yes it has 1st and 2nd casehardened, but it does not have the hardened synchronizers, the Ti ring reinforcers (built into the case in 89-89), and the heavy fluting in the oil pump. It is still a great gearbox but it is a more domesticated version (in compairison) of the turbo S much like all the 89-91 951 cars. Really, think about it, ask your self why does the 88S have 7 more HP, and handles, and drives a little bit better.

What designates the vintage of a car? In other words is it the calender year
1st Jan- 31 Dec? Unlikely, so what if you have a car that says it's built in Dec '88? What components does that have? Did they automatically change over to the different parts in January? Just wondering.

Yes this is interesting, but hard to believe that porsche would put better parts on an earlier model. That just doesnt make too much sense. We need to check and see if he is right about the horse power.

I have heard (though I don't know the source) that the '88 turbo S cars were built on a different production line (the race line?) and that a higher degree of care was made -- like weighing and blue printing all of the engine components.
For the '89 model year, the production was moved to the regular line and parts were just pulled off the shelf in a first-come first-serve fashion.
Who knows if any of this is true -- I'll let you decide that!
(FWIW - I've also heard a similar story about the 911 RS Americas -- and I believe that to be true, because there is a fair amount of race-prep/assembly differences that have no other explaination)

I used to be on rennlist but kept getting bothered to the poin I was getting over 200 emails a day asking about one thing or another.
I even had one guy find out where I live just so he could see the cars...Funny story, He had driven up to colorado just to find me, he was a collector and just wanted to see them...LOL so I showed him, I never saw such a happy person, that is till I told him they weren't for sale.
People like that don't understand how much a prototype cost to build. hehehe even a regular 924 GTR cost over a $100K back in 1980, the prototypes are easily 10-100 times that.
Good luck on your auction.
