Default Help with cam box

I've set the engine to TDC, removed the 9 6mm bolts, the 6 8mm plugs, the timing belt and the 2 bolts that hold the belt cover to the distributor cap and rotor. Clark's garage says to now lift the cam cover off but it won't move. Either I've left out a step or the cover has been sealed on some way. Any suggestions on how to remove it?

Bolts inside? No, are they under the plugs?

Before you start taking out the bolts inside the cam tower, thread two or three of the bottom bolts back in to relieve some pressure on it. This will make it easier to get the top ones out.

You can but the long hex socket ready to go from Snap on, but your are going to pay $18 or so.

Thanks Schwarz, I felt really stupid after reading your response. I already had a set of long handle Husky brand hex wrenches. They worked great, I just used a set of channel locks on the L at the top for leverage and out they came. Thanks everyone for your responses.

Inserting the 6mm allen into those bolts and striking the allen with a rubber mallet will also help.

Be careful so you do not drop these bolts inside camtower. they are quite difficult to remove. Be also extra carful not to mess with bolt head.

Buy a correct tool for this project.

I bought one of those sets of 3/8 drive allen sockets made by Stanley at Wal-mart. I took the one that fit - 6mm iirc - and ground down the outside until it fits, works like a champ.

I just use that, a long extension, and a hammer to fully seat the allen tip and to "wake-up" the fastener. I have successfully taken off MANY cam towers like this.......

I dropped them a few times in the cam box, just use a flexible magnet, it always get's them out

They will also come out through the lifter bores once the tower is off the head -- just be careful they don't scratch the cam.
