**UPDATE** HELP! My car suddenly thinks it's a Diesel!
Hi all, here's the news:
So just when I thought I was making progress diagnosing a low-boost problem on my car, I turn it on today and something is dreadfully wrong: it sounds like it's dieseling.
I get in the car and I'm confronted w/ an oil gauge reading 0-1 bar -- not the usual 5-6 bar i get upon startup when it's cold.
I immediately turned the car off and restarted it a couple min later in hopes that it was a reeeaaalllyyy messed up lifter and it would sort itself out on the second restart...yeah I know: a long-shot, and sure enough it didn't help.
Obviously I didn't keep the car on for too long, given that it seems like I'm simply not getting any oil circulation/pressure. Would this problem make my car sound like it's dieseling? The last interaction i've had w/ any part of the fuel system was two weeks ago at least, and I've driven the car daily since then w/ no problems.
I drove the car last night w/ no probs; start her up today midday and am confronted w/ this conundrum.
HELP! Any suggestions? Where should i look to first? Nobody in Tucson here knows a wit about 951's so I have to look elsewhere -- and I trust yous guys!
Thanks in advance...

You need to hope that the diesel sound isnt a rod knocking with oil pressure like that! Have you checked the oil? I would say that is step one. And in direct answer to your question, a car with no oil pressure and a knocking rod could sound like a diesel. It would be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to make a 951 engine ping or diesel at idle...not enough compression.
Sorry for the bad news.... I hope I'm wrong!!!!

These cars do make a horrible noise when there is low/no oil pressure, i experienced that when i replaced the head gasket + oil cooler seals.
Take off the coil to distributor wire, and start the car. It will not start, since there will be no spark, keep cranking for no more than ten seconds, and keep doing so and watch the oil pressure gauge.
If it rises to 3 bar or more, reconnect that wire and start the car. If it doesn't, then keep trying untill you give up, then we start looking for problems.
PS: You will start smelling fuel since pump will be running at this time.

WHen trying to get oil pressure without starting the car, pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Much better than flooding the cylinders.

Great thanks guys for the info so far. I'm not currently at my car but I'll try it in the morn.
FWIW, i did check the dipstick and it registered near-full (in need of an oil change, but hey-- I've been busy). The car wasn't cold but wasn't warm...in Tucson sitting out in the sun the car warms up quite easily.
IF I am able to register oil pressure while cranking w/o fuel + spark, what does that mean? it seems like something will still need to be replaced due to sticking or whatnot...
Also FYI the motor's got 117k pretty easy miles; the car's otherwise in truly excellent shape. Oh and when I shut the driver door to go cry after hearing my motor the driver mirror falls off...figures...

It is the oil pressure relief valve.
If you don't get pressure, that would be the first easiest thing to check, but let's talk about chcking later.

UPDATE: So I disconnected spark/fuel and turned it over numerous times and not once did the pressure rise above 1 bar. I think I tried 8 or 9 times FWIW.
So now what?
